Unexpected Love
Chapters 13 - 24
(view spoiler)[ I feel like that would have been a good cliffhanger if I wasn't so bored. Thea is stubborn, but the training for the magic that she's getting is just the same things being repeated. The magic overall is kind of disappointing because I don't even know what Thea is supposed to strive for with her magic (is it just calling lightning? Turning it into different shapes? Causing different weather?) and it mentioned that Wilder received his strength and magic from the Fates. What magic? Is the ability to sense wraiths and reapers supposed to be it?
Thea's complete belief in the fate stone is annoying. Maybe if the magic was more developed I could understand her obsession with it, but so far nothing has happened to show that it's a certainty. It feels like the fate stone actually stands for a new beginning - maybe her taking up the throne or doing the Great Rite.
I'm wondering if there's something suspicious about Wren because of her sudden desire for Thea to take the throne as well as Thea's brief memories. Is it even possible in this world for someone to steal someone else's magic?
The way Wilder described the Great Rite doesn't make me want to read about Thea going through it. If it does end up happening, maybe it will be more interesting since Wilder couldn't mention some parts, but it kind of feels like one of those moments where Thea is going to have to battle with herself and accept herself.

Chapters 1 - 12
(view spoiler)[ I'm still not convinced with Thea and Wilder, but I really like how the trio (Thea, Kai and Cal) trust each other, especially when they were sent on their mission.
Who is the Daughter of Darkness? Anya?
I think I need to read Slaying the Shadow Prince after this book.

How it fits: Title - Queen of Spades
Chapter 31 - Epilogue
(view spoiler)[ A 2 star rating for me isn't bad. I liked this book and a lot of the ideas in it, but I wanted more details about them - Kipp and Cal were great and I liked Malik but he, along with other side characters, could have appeared more; Thea's training was interesting but eventually a lot of it started being skipped and this is only the beginning of what she's going to be learning; there's some sort of magic in this world and while there wasn't necessarily much need for it to be explained, I wanted that; I'm curious about the reapers and wraiths. It's not really talked about what being an apprentice to the Warswords entails or what the others (like Kipp) will be doing.
While I don't mind slow burn, something about Wilder and Thea is slightly annoying. Maybe it's just that they are pushing each other away and I would prefer if they at least tried.
The plot is slow too as it just seems to be about the Veil and now it seems that Thea is the descendant of a line of royalty that shouldn't exist.
I do want to continue the series and I can see liking the other books more when there's more actions and the characters are interacting more. Also, I really hope Thea deals with Seb.

I LOVE Kipp and Cal!"(view spoiler)[ I’m really hoping they’re not going to die. (hide spoiler)]["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
Chapters 21- 30
(view spoiler)[ I’m liking the book even though it’s a bit slow and right now I’m not seeing how this is a four book series.
I like Malik and he reminds me a bit of Desmond from Refuge, but I wish he and Thea’s friends were shown more.
I’m excited to see what the trials entail, when and how the apprentices are going to be picked, and what more is going to happen. Also, I can’t wait to see what Thea’s power is.

Chapters 9-16 => [spoilers removed]"That’s a really good idea!
(view spoiler)[ Maybe she inherited magic from the parents who abandoned her and her sister? So far the only time magic has been mentioned is when Thea can sense others having it so I’m curious to see some in action and how it can be used. (hide spoiler)]["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
