154447 The best way to find out is to give it a shot! Write a shorter work and report back with your experience Rohvannyn! :D

I'd like to hear it.

154447 Hi!

154447 I can share my experience about this because I have been doing this since February.
I ♥ my Novelettes and I wouldn't have it any other way now that I have written them. :)

I have six (seven soon) Novelettes published now on Amazon. They are all between 12k-15k words. I couldn't really see anything too short on Amazon. I have seen really short books (3000 words) on Amazon and that seems too short for me. To each their own of course, but I find that too short, unless it was a permafree.

Good Points:
- I know for a fact that people that have downloaded them for free have purchased other Novelettes, and even my main books.

- If I put effort into the promotional days and actually remember to market them (sometimes I just have days and use them and forget them and only get a few downloads, but still a few is a few more) I always get spill over with either other purchases.

- More Release days - books that have just come out seem to experience higher visibility on Amazon. (Don't quote me on that) This has always lead (for me at least) to higher sales on it, and other books following the release. Also, release days are great social media posts that are easier to make less 'book whacky' than many other book buying posts.

- Author Rank - More books means more author rank I have noticed. If one book is slumping for a bit it doesn't drag you down as fast! Not sure what use that actually has, but it has made an impact.

- More books - The more you have out there, the better your chance to be discovered by someone that will like your work. More books also tends to lead to more reviews, if you like that sort of thing.

- Kindle Unlimited Page Reads - A page is a page, it doesn't matter where it comes from. Short stories shine here!

- More variety - You can make a story and it doesn't need to be a related to your other books (but it can). You can experiment with different genres, different characters, and different ideas. Even the same genre but a different story can make your portfolio bigger. With more variety you have more chance to make a character that someone loves!

- More chance to make not very subtle butt jokes - This is more of a personal perk, your experience will vary.

- Conventions - I am planning on taking them to a convention and selling them. They will have a much lower price point, and it will be easier for someone to take a chance on them! Plus, they are easier to give away than a full book! :)

Not as good points:
- More production costs - There is more layout, more ebook conversion, more cover making time and costs. I do this myself, and quite frankly I love it, but others who don't know how will have more cost here. (But it is a great chance to learn!)

- % Royalty Profit - if you go with a $0.99 story then the royalties are stuck at 35%. That is a big cut from the $2.99 price point royalties. You need to sell more to make the same profit as a higher price point. You can price a shorter story with a big ticket cost, but I don't know if it will sell well enough to compensate. Also, I can buy a full sized book for that higher price, so it is something to consider.

- More promo work - This doesn't sound too bad, until you have a week long promotion with a different book each day and try to market them all everywhere. Trust me, it makes a huge difference in your marketing time when you have a bunch of books to set up.

Long post short: What you get out of them really depends on what you put into them.
If you have specific questions, I can probably help! I've been doing this long enough to think I have an idea what I'm doing!
154447 I am a graphic designer and artist, so for my covers I have looked within. :)
