152458 Hello everyone,

QotW:

Do you try to keep an internal map in your head of the setting of the book? Do you love studying maps when they are included with a book?

I do enjoy looking over maps in books and I will go back on occasion to remind myself of where we are but all in all I do not study or spend too much attention to them.

152458 Hello reading friends. I am exhausted. Monday started a four week college course. Haven't done any school in a long time so it's a little much. They shove a whole semester in a month, thank goodness I am a pretty good reader. I am very tired though.

Question of the Week

Do you like to read humorous books? What are some favorites?
It is not something I tend to lean towards. I did listen to Ellen's Seriously... I'm Kidding on a long drive which was very funny and a long time ago I read Belle Weather: Mostly Sunny with a Chance of Scattered Hissy Fits and as I recall, I found it hilarious at the time.

152458 Hello! I'm hoping to crush some reading this weekend because as of Monday I am not only a full time worker but a full time student as well. Plus I have a kid, husband, dogs and book club that I have to keep up with it. Needless to say I shall be busy. I love busy though.

QotW:
What do you do when you come across a word you don't know while you're reading?

I love this question!!!! I am very similar that not knowing a word doesn't generally impact my reading due to context clues but I do mark down the word and look it up at a later time. I want to know ALL THE WORDS!!! lol

152458 Hello everyone. Vegas is being particularly wonky in the wx dept. It's in the 60's, which is preferable to 115 but the constant shifting gets me sick. Literally. Just make up your mind.

I am behind in my checking in and reading in general. I have been working on enrolling in the summer semester for college. I am super excited to go back to school! It has been my priority though. Ok let's get to the good stuff.

Question of the Week
(From Jen) Is there a book you read in high school or your children have read in high school which you think should have had a trigger warning?

I agree with a lot of the comments of concern that schools or parents would use trigger warnings as a reason to ban books. Censorship does make me weary. However I feel like people need to be aware of situations in the case of triggers. Like extreme situations. Graphic things. I agree with disturbing content just being something that will create censorship. Too answer the question, the only book I can think of that may have been triggering that I read in high school (that I recall) was Hiroshima.

152458 Hello everyone,

Last week was a killer reading week for me. This week, with a wedding, a birthday and Mother's Day I ran out of time. Plus the books I started have not yet proven terribly interesting.

Currently Reading

Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats by T.S. Eliot
Four Dead Queens by Astrid Scholte

I will finish the poems because I only have a few left despite not loving them. Strong possibility the other two are getting dnf'd by next week.

Escargot by Dashka Slater
So cute!

Question of the week:

(from Cendaquenta) Do you prefer stand alone books or series?

I like both but I will ONLY read series if it is written in it's entirety. or non-linear series where the volumes do not depend upon each other. This is because of the Harry Potter Series. I read the first 3 books when I was 12. The 7th was published and released when I was 21. Can't do that ever again. I am HIGHLY impatient. lol

152458 Hello one and all!

Great reading week for me. My best friend is getting married on Saturday and I am so excited! Beyond that I am starting to get to the point in the challenge where it is getting harder to find books I want to read.

Does anyone know if The Secret Garden or Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats are responsible for any famous idioms??? I was going to read my daughter Alice's Adventures in Wonderland but forgot what the prompt was and thought it was childhood classic I hadn't read (which was last year I think) and blew it.

QotW:
(This question is from Raye) What other reading challenges are you participating in, if any?

I am doing a picture book challenge for ATY because last year I overdid it. I am doing this challenge in order and weekly so I am up to date on it. I also have a pantone color of the year challenge, trying to read 10 books with covers that at In Living Coral or similar. I think I've done 3 or 4 on that.

Have you ever found something unusual tucked inside a library book? Could be something interesting or something disgusting (just google "things found in library books" if you dare).

I will skip that google search. Receipts mostly. Not necessarily library ones though. I believe I found a candy wrapper once. I enjoy inscriptions sometimes found in the library book sale. It's interesting to see the life a book had before it found you.

QotW:

What's more important to you: beautiful writing or a strong plot?

Plot. 100% plot. Perfect example is the Harry Potter series. J.K. Rowling writing is a little on the clunky side but the story itself is so amazing it goes mostly unnoticed. Now I am not against beautiful writing but I need plot first.

152458 Hello. I woke up sick yesterday and I am still not feeling great. Bleh. It was a busy week for me. Went to Arizona for 2 days for a baby shower and a birthday party. QotW:

Where do you get most of your books from? Do you buy, borrow from the library or from friends?

So far this year it looks like most of the books I am reading I own. Whether I have had them a long time or bought them on a whim. I go to Barnes and Noble probably once every two weeks. I definitely buy more books then I probably should. lol. I hate that shops keep closing and I believe when they are all gone the amazons of the world are going to pull us over hot coals with price gauging because they have no competition. We don't have any used bookstores or small retailers in our area otherwise I would shop there as well.
I do go to the library at least once a week but with due dates that is harder to get through things. For my ATY challenge I get all of those from the library. I have also been using hoopla and overdrive a lot for audio books.
I do borrow from friends sometimes. My book club have our own private group mainly so we can see what we each own for borrowing purposes

152458 Title: The Last Romantics

(this one is from Lauren) Do you prefer novels that end neatly, tying up loose ends, or novels with endings that leave you guessing?

I don't need to have everything tied up but I at least need to feel like it's over. Sometimes ambiguous endings still give you closure. I HATE endings that just scream "read the sequel". Ugh. Write one book at a time.

QotW:

Book-to-screen adaptations have a reputation for being truly horrendous. I know we all have our lists of worst adaptations, but that’s not what I want to talk about today. There have also been some truly spectacular adaptations in the last couple of years (Netflix, Hulu, etc). What are some of your favorite recent book-to-screen adaptations?

And I apologize to our international members who may not have access to all of these. Please feel free to share anything you’ve found in your area that you’ve loved!

I actually don't think that the book is always better. Sometimes I find them equal but different. Lately there have been more the movie is better, than I am used to.

To All the Boys I've Loved Before Love, love, love this movie. The book was ok. The film is the winner. I'm so excited for the rumored sequel (which I have also read and is also only ok)

Bird Box I liked both the book and the movie. There were a few things I liked better in the book and a few things I preferred in the film.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society movie and book are totally different animals imho but I loved them both for what they were.

Crazy Rich Asians absolutely adored everything about the film. Did not care for the book.

A Simple Favor I did not love this movie by any means. It was ok. The book was a dumpster fire and I don't understand how it got optioned for a film to begin with. The movie was a VAST improvement.

I love the show/film but haven't read the book
