Age never matters when it comes to stories. I'm pretty sure that if Steven Spielberg is directing it, the book has to be good and would definitely cater to he non-video-games-playing crowd as well. And you're right, we all have each other to understand the references we might miss.

I'm really, really excited for this read!!

147920 Off the top of my head, I'm really looking forward to reading these 3 books in the coming year:
- Ready Player One - because I saw the movie adaptation's trailer (releasing in 2018) and fell in love with the concept. plus Steven Spielberg is directing it so all the more reason to read it before I can even think of watching it!
- Sleeping Beauties - because you know... STEPHEN KING!!
- Renegades - again, I saw the trailer and loved it.

147920 Books are releasing by tons every single day; they're not all good and they're not all bad. But once in a while, there comes a book that manages to catch your attention right from the day you first come to know about it. It can be because of its author, their writing style, a particular series, book cover design or just the blurb... and no matter what, you know that you have to get your hands on it sooner or later.
This is the thread to share those books that you really want to get and are looking forward to reading.

You can even share the old titles that you haven't read but want to read someday.

147920 Reviving this one too...

Have you ever noticed that you can't really eat anything while listening to an audiobook using an earpiece (headphone or earplugs)? I mean the crunching keeps echoing in the ears and I tend to lose track fo the narration.

147920 Cheryl wrote: "I love fully developed characters that seem real. I don't even need to like a character, but I do need to feel they are authentically portrayed."

I'm with you on this one. Liking a character is not important, but they have to be real.

147920 Hello RMFAO-ers,

We're going to begin 2018 with a bang at RMFAO with a buddy read of Ready Player One by Ernest Cline.

Ready Player one released on 16th August 2011, and in 2012, the book received an Alex Award from the Young Adult Library Services Association division of the American Library Association and won the 2012 Prometheus Award.
A film adaptation, directed by Steven Spielberg, is currently in production and slated to premiere on March 30, 2018 - the main reason behind this buddy read!

So get ready for this amazing month-long buddy read that will be beginning on 5th January 2018.

Comment here to announce your participation. You can join the buddy read at any time during the month.

I just realized, for year-long challenges the Level system wasn't good. So I have changed it. Please check once again, though I doubt you will still be completing level 5 easily as you do read a good number of audiobooks.

Also, I'm pretty sure that you'll be running this thread more than me as I'm still an maeture (worse if that is possible.) Please keep recommending audiobooks here (especially open source ones.)
Dec 18, 2017 06:24PM

147920 I'm going to go for Bookworm (6-8) but will obviously try to get to Scholar at least, maybe professor if I find the right books (which I usually do thanks to you and Cheryl!)

I already have a couple left from this year, so I'll be completing them. Plus, I have H.P. Lovecraft's stories to finish (thanks a bunch for introducing me to his writing!) and I have this big-ass Sci-Fi short story collector's book to finish (though I'm gonna skip all the Verne stories from it so basically I'll be reading only 40% of that book.)

Can you please suggest some Science-Fiction or Speculative-Fiction books for January? It would be great if they are audiobooks and not too lengthy :)

147920 Cheryl wrote: "Have you read all of the Game of Thrones series? I've only read the first book."

Yes. In fact, I've read the first book twice already. I intended to read the entire series again because I thought GRRM was releasing Winds Of Winter in late 2016, but when I realized it wasn't happening I stopped (after the first book's re-read.) I'm gonna re-read the entire series in whichever year Winds Of Winter would be releasing.
I love (LOVE) this series!! As it was my first real high fantasy series, but the first book is my absolute true love. I'm a BIG fan of Eddard Stark... I have his posters and will be buying his funko pop soon too! For some reason, he touched me (along with millions of others) more than any other character in this series alive or dead and I simply can't get over his death :'(

147920 I'm kind of reviving this thread.

I'm currently reading A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms (The Tales of Dunk and Egg, #1-3) by George R.R. Martin

147920 Hello all the members of RMFAO,

With the evolution of technology, the book industry has also progressed by leaps and bounds. Where there were only physical books available at one time, there came ebooks and took the world by storm. As we progressed ahead in time, there came a new format in which readers around the globe could enjoy stories - audiobooks. Audiobooks instantly won everyone's heart - not only they were easy to carry (like ebooks) but also you could listen to them while doing something else that was mundane, like driving or cycling or washing clothes or cooking, or anything really because you there is no need to hold it in your hands.

Today many readers prefer reading audiobooks over other formats, but there are few who either don't like audiobooks or simply haven't got the time to explore them enough. If you're among the latter, this challenge is for you!

All you have to do is pick a Level, and try and read that many audiobooks in the entire year. Simple. No rules at all.

Levels:
Level 1: Casual Reader: 1-5 books (easy)
Level 2: Frequent Reader: 5-10 books (moderate)
Level 3: Bookworm: 10-15 books (mildly strenuous)
Level 4: Bibliophile: 15-25 books (strenuous)
Level 5: Bookiopath: 25 books or more (challenging)

147920 Hello all the members of RMFAO,

We all love reading series. And how can we not? There are so many amazing series that we simply can't have enough of. Reading about the familiar characters, following their lives one book after the other and exploring their worlds intimately. Reading series is like living in different fictional worlds in a true sense. But so many times, much to our dismay, we fail to complete series started long ago. Sometimes "real life" comes in the way and some time procrastination does, but no matter what we always think about reading and completing these series, but to no avail.

This challenge is devised considering this very problem, and we are happy to present the 4th instalment of this most extraordinary challenge - RMFAO 2018 Series Challenge.

RMFAO 2018 Series Challenge is here to give you an opportunity to complete the series you've longed to complete for a long time! You can even start with a fresh series and try to complete it within the year. Just pick a Level you want to aim for and start reading.

Levels:
Level 1: Casual Reader: 1 series (easy)
Level 2: Frequent Reader: 2 series (moderate)
Level 3: Bookworm: 3 series (mildly strenuous)
Level 4: Bibliophile: 5 series (strenuous)
Level 5: Bookiopath: 6 series or more (challenging)

147920 Dear members of RMFAO,

We are back with the ultimate challenge for NetGalley addicts - RMFAO 2018 NetGalley Challenge.
If you are a book reviewer, NetGalley is inevitable a big part of your life and as you might know well, being a NetGalley reviewer has thousands of perks but one huge drawback - you can NEVER EVER clear your NetGalley shelf. And talking about the books sitting on NetGalley's shelf, we can never forget about the dreadful Ratio, especially if you've been on NetGalley for a couple of years.
But do not worry, here is the one challenge that can help you get sorted - RMFAO 2018 NetGalley Challenge.

You can download this image here: https://thereadingbud.com/wp-content/...

This challenge is for those readers who have hundreds of books on their NetGalley shelf and still keep on requesting new titles every month (or probably every week) *wink*

It is time to dig up those old titles that you once deemed important enough to request and felt exhilarated after getting accepted for them. It's time to start reading all those old titles that are affecting your Ratio and stopping you from getting accepted for the rare and the famous titles that have frequently started popping up on NetGalley's radar by big authors and publishers.

Levels:
Level 1: Casual Reader: 1-5 books (easy)
Level 2: Frequent Reader: 5-10 books (moderate)
Level 3: Bookworm: 10-15 books (mildly strenuous)
Level 4: Bibliophile: 15-25 books (strenuous)
Level 5: Bookiopath: 25 books or more (challenging)

Let's challenge ourselves and strengthen our NetGalley shelves!
All you have to do is pick a level (see below) and start reading the books you really can't afford to miss from your NetGalley TBR list. Feel free to share your current reads, latest picks, upcoming titles that you're really excited about, afterthoughts, recommendations, fan-rants and even review links here.

Other challenges that you can participate in are:
RMFAO 2018 Genre Challenge
RMFAO 2018 Classics Catchup
RMFAO Series Challenge
RMFAO Audiobook Challenge
RMFAO Bonus Challenge (link will be up soon!)

Hey Kathy, welcome to RMFAO!
I used to read after my bedtime too, though I used to sneak out onto the terrace to read. It's fun to be a rebellious reader, isn't it?
We're going to have a lot of group reads and reading challenges in 2018 so I hope you'll have a great time here. Right now there's a group read going on in case you want to check. :)
It's good to have you onboard!

147920 Dear members of RMFAO,

We are here with the 4th instalment of the most amazing reading challenge on this planet *drumrolls* - RMFAO 2018 Genre Challenge.

RMFAO GC18
You can download this image here:https://thereadingbud.com/wp-content/...

For the fourth year of this challenge, we have the same genres that we had last year except for a single change. This year we'd have GRAPHIC NOVELS too!!
For those who are new to this challenge, for Genre Challenge, we read one genre (sometimes even two when we have the alternate-genre month) every month. We post the genre list in advance (for this year's genre list see below) so that we can plan our reads in advance. The focus of this challenge is not only to read more books in the genre you love but also to give you a chance to explore new, unfamiliar or lesser known genres. Not to mention the joy of reading with other book lovers and exploring new titles that they love and adore.
We don't want to burden or restrict the participants by specifying sub-genres because that creates a set of problems that comes in between the actual reading. You can pick the sub-genres as per your convenience.
Another perk of this challenge is that don't have to buy new books to participate in this challenge; all you have to do is go through your own books and organise your TBR-list as per the genres for this challenge. Simple!
One of the coolest things about this challenge is that the mods are so awesome that they even tell you the sources and links to obtain free books available online legally. What else can a bookworm ask for!?

In order to participate, simply announce your participation here. Or if you have a blog just do a simple post announcing your participation and sharing details of the challenge (you can freely copy and paste from here) and leave the link here.

And now it's time to unveil the Genre List!

*Alternate-Genre Month - For these months, we have 2 genre options. You can pick and do either of the two or both!

Monthly Levels:
Level 1: Casual Reader: 1 book (easy)
Level 2: Frequent Reader: 2 books (moderate)
Level 3: Bookworm: 3 books (mildly strenuous)
Level 4: Bibliophile: 4 books (strenuous)
Level 5: Bookiopath: 5 books or more (challenging)

All The Best and Happy Reading!
147920 Hey Andrew, you joined us for the read! So good to see you (it's been a long time.)
So glad you're enjoying the book! This book is indeed very good and best enjoyed slowly.
This was my first Tim Powers book and after finishing this one, I searched for more of his books and guess what(!) I decided to read The Anubis Gates next (whenever I get the time.) So it's good to know that you enjoyed that one too, I'll definitely try and read it next year :)
