Thank you for finishing the book, you saved me some pain. I was considering rallying, but really there was no coming back from Gestella.
Gestella by Susan Palwick ★½☆☆☆ Well, that was outrageously depressing. Not at all what I wanted before bed and it makes me want to chuck this whole anthology.
The White Man by Thomas M. Disch DNFThe different perspective from a Somali refugee in Minnesota could have been entertaining and frightful, but it was boring. Nothing was happening. And again with the Buffy obsession. Every intro, and several stories, Buffy Buffy Buffy! It is possible to be a Urban Fiction fan with out giving a flying fig about Buffy.
That’s a shame. Too soon after Arecibo.I watched The Tomorrow War, with lots of fast forward. The monsters were the best part and Yvonne Strahovsky is great in anything. The annoying part was the lack of grenades. The worst part was me yelling at the screen You’re just ripping off Alien! WTF? which was unnecessary when a cicada non-alien plot-line would have been more interesting. Anyone else tried this?
Yeah, i vacillate between thinking that looks fun and that looks unspeakably awful. Strange the movie that hits that spot.
Farewell, My Zombie by Francesca Lia Block ★★☆☆☆ Another dreary bit of nonsense with no romance or even action. The PNR section is a fail.
If Paula Guran was responsible for these selections as PNR then I disagree Fiona, she knows nothing. Worse, she thinks she does.
Boobs by Suzy McKee Charnas ★★★½☆ “There are people who just plain do not deserve to live.”
Published in ‘89 there were some authenticity awful 80s problems. I sympathized with the MC as I started getting boobs in 5th grade and yes a boy grabbed my shirt once to illustrate the point. But I got my punch in before the teachers broke it up. Punching was a thing in the 80s, you can’t look down too hard as school shootings were not.
And again, what the hell is this doing in the romance section. This story has rape in it? WTF?!?!
Hit by Bruce McAllister ★☆☆☆☆ It’s impressive when you can make hunting vampires boring. The cherry on top girl-as-the-prize sealed this as a one star for me. The romance section has thus far has no romance. None.
I saw Werewolves Within. It was fun and I would give it a solid B, maybe higher in the Humorous Werewolf Movies category. It turns out this is also a video game which looks like fun even though I haven’t played much of anything since Tetris.https://www.ubisoft.com/en-us/game/we...
J and Canavan are right, we are in fictionland and it is the authors role to create a new world solid enough for magic and pseudoscience to feel real. (view spoiler)
United Airlines just invested 30 billion in new planes, guess someone is damn sure we will be traveling again, virus or no virus.https://youtu.be/FFXnjDhG9L0
The sopranos are back: https://youtu.be/P5fLDJeTsLAThat kid is freaking me out with how much he looks like James Gandolfini
*imdb later - that is James Gandolfini’s son
This is not one of the classics I enjoyed. Psychohistory and the thousand year plan felt ridiculous. The trailer looks like showy scifi with some good actors.https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
And FINALLY some romance in the paranormal romance section! Well, sparks.
Seeing Eye by Patricia Briggs ★★★★½
It’s the Tom and Moira origin story! I’ve read it before and I enjoyed it again (and again). Tom, the werewolf seeks out the powerful blind witch to save his brother from an evil coven.
