Rattlesnakes ★★★☆☆ Snakes and ghosts and Covid and characters from stories I have yet to read. I have never wanted to read Cujo but I want to read Duma Key now.
The Dreamers ★★★★½
Oh yes, I loved that dark dark trip to Lovecraft Lane. A vet comes back from Vietnam to be recruited by a rich mad scientist looking for what’s behind the Wall of Sleep.
The Answer Man ★★★½☆
Three times in a lawyers life he meets a man by the side of the road selling truth. These truths both inspire and sadden his life. It was a bummer to read.
The Hoard of Gibbelins by Lord Dunsany ★★★★½My first thought was the Gibbelins were not monsters for valuing consistent food, water, a roof over their head, and family over shiny rocks. Only people are do greedy and foolish but call others monsters to feel less so. Thus I adored the end as an object lesson. Schmuck knight, lol.
These have not been my kind of horror stories. Definitely horrible, but also sad and human. They slowed me down. Hopefully there will be more vampires and baby Cthulhu’s.
The Ghost of a Flea ★★½☆☆ Lots of references and allusions but not much story.
The Atrocity Exhibitionists by Brian Hodges ★★½☆☆
Covid plus social media addiction lead to madness and death. It was gory.
The Father of Modern Gynecology by Joyce Carol Oates ★☆☆☆☆
DNF
The bit I read I need scrubbed from my mind.
Here Comes Your Man by Indrapramit Das ★☆☆☆☆
DNF
A long rape story - pass.

I also liked the ending. I thought she would go for broke but she kept the job and left the rest to karma.
The Virgin Jimmy Peck by Daryl Gregory ★★★★☆ “They grow up so fast.”
♫ Baby Cthulhu… ♫
A lonely man joins a cult and finds purpose in fathering the end of the world.
Wet Red Grin by Gemma Files ★★★★☆ Wicked and gory! During Covid an under qualified nurse takes a job at her aunt’s nursing home.
The Midway by Fran Wilde ★★★½☆ An ocean side carnival hides a Lovecraftian beast. It wasn’t vengeful enough, there should have been some epic destruction.
You Have What I Need by Ian Rogers ★★★½☆ A nurse and her patient ride out a vampire attack on the hospital in a panic room. There were unanswered questions.
The Nightingale and the Rose ★★★☆☆ A nightingale sacrifices her life, and children, for the idea of love. Her offering is not appreciated by the petty boy who thought he deserved to win the pretty girl. At least Mother Knight heard the song to right the wrong.
Conversations With the Sea Witch ★★★½☆ Well past happily ever after, the old ladies of The Little Mermaid have their daily chats about the past.
A Country Called Winter ★★★½☆From a first-generation difficult college experience to being swept away to fantasy. Goodbye muggle problems, hello magical royal issues. Improvement.
Welcome Orlando! We are currently reading modern fantasy and next month it’s horror for the spooky season.
The Other Thea ★★☆☆☆ A young woman must reunite with her shadow (deeper emotions) before she disappears. I thought there would be some dramatic teamwork to see the two sides come together or at least a deep conversation. Nope.
Blanchefleur ★★★★½ You had me at talking cats. It was one lovely adventure after another. That would have been enough for four stars but it was also a story of how to raise a good man, something difficult in any world.
Red as Blood and White as Bone ★★★☆☆
A depressing story of an orphan that accidentally aided in an assassination. It encourages her to later join the resistance against the Nazis but not the Russians. It was nowhere near a happy ending but an interesting story.
