These stories beg to be read out loud. It’s true, they have that feel to them. You need a campfire, kids, and your grandmother’s voice.

Old Nick and the Girl from Sweden ★★★☆☆ A girl cleverly enlists her twin sister to defeat the supernatural old man who would have enslaved her.
The Way of the World by Norway ★★☆☆☆
Depressing - I’ll say no more.
I loved Beetlejuice, still do. It was for all the little 80s goth girls that felt strange and unusual among the wild and colorful times. It was also a great mix of funny and spooky.
And all the Oscars will go to Goulda: https://youtube.com/watch?v=8HZLQhuEI...Even the trailer gives me goosebumps.
In scary news there is Beetlejuice 2 in the making. I want to scream about this crap - stop messing with my childhood. Then I just shrug, one more movie I’m not spending money on.

The Magician’s Pupil from Denmark ★★★☆☆ Rather a lot of back and forth playing the same tricks over and over again. Minimally entertaining.
Hildur, the Queen of Elves from Iceland ★★★½☆
The curse of the disapproving mother-in-law.
The Widow’s Son from Norway ★★½☆☆
A poor boy steals from his caregiver and eventually becomes a king. Somehow it didn’t sit well.
Toller’s Neighbours from Denmark ★★★½☆
A cute origin story for gemstones.
Mighty Mikko: The Story of a Poor Woodsman and a Grateful Fox from Finland ★★★★☆
Saving a Fox pays great dividends for a kindhearted woodsman.
Sure thing! Lots of the young YouTubers excited about this emphasize they are getting to see a film. Things have been digital for so long…
One of the 19 theaters playing the 70mm version of Oppenheimer is in my hood. I found this out standing in line for more tickets to Dead Reckoning. People had driven hours to see it. The FOMO kicked in and I bought tickets for August 1st.

East of the Sun and West of the Moon from Norway ★★★½☆ I enjoyed the bear ride, an iconic image. It was also pleasant to read the woman adventuring to save her man. But the ending needed a big reveal, the trick made little sense.

The Forest Bride: The Story of a Little Mouse Who Was a Princess from Finland ★★★★½ I adored this charmer where it is the man who wins by being kind and true in a classic Disney-style fairytale.

The Little Mermaid at least broke even. You have to factor in the hundred million plus for marketing they never include in the stated film budget. She’s just now swimming in.
