The Green Word by Jeffrey Ford ★★★★★ “Love - she planted the simple seed of this word in the hearts of all who knew her, and although, after a long life, she eventually passed on, she never died.”
What a beautiful story to end on! A forest witch uses trickery and magic to save her people, her land, from cold-hearted Christian invaders. It was beautiful retribution.
Meg 2 to put a toothy smile on your face: https://youtu.be/2pAYgJy8SPcIt looks so much better than the book I one star DNF’d.
That’s wonderful! Was it also a romance, or revenge, or mostly thrill kills. Crimson Deep is a prehistoric croc having blast and follows an ex-cop who has dealt with strange things before. I would like it better if the narrator was not mediocre.
The Vampire Tapestry - now I have to read that. Chris Buehlman, a favorite author of mine, gave it a glowing review. I remember having that conversation ages ago with a boyfriend about the scary impression of gay men created by a big fat gay sadist being the first openly gay character we watched repeatedly on film as children. And now I wonder if that still holds a little sway as my favorite Bond villain is the fat gay sadist in Forever and a Day.
You beat me, lol. It has pros and cons, they dive deep into the politics verses the religion/mysticism. I dislike the varied accents of the close knit Fremen, and who the hell is Lady Margot? Well, it will still be worth a watch. I enjoy all the versions of Dune like I have enjoyed all the versions of The Joker.
That’s a gorgeous cover Tyler! This hasn’t been much of a reading year for me so hopefully this will inspire some finishes.
A Trail if Feathers, A Trail of Blood by Stephanie M. Wytovich ★★★½☆ A harsh little story. When Baba Yaga says you can’t go home again, you should listen. In this case, the Yaga was merciful. Yaga took back the bleeding beaten woman - for a price.
All Bitterness Burned Away by Jill Baguchinsky ★★★★☆ “I told myself the wrong story, then. There is no fairy tale, and there is no wicked stepmother. But I can still end it the right way.”
Baba Yaga saves the day! Not your usual hero, but the hero that little family deserved.
Herald the Knight by Mercedes M. Yardley ★★★★☆ Baba Yaga falls in love with Ghost Rider. What awesome kiddos they could have had.

THE ABYSS CALLS.
Can you smell the sea swelling?
Can you hear the waves crashing?
Can you feel the gods gathering?
It’s coming...
It’s that time of year again friends! Merfolk May is when we celebrate all the sea has to offer; from mermaids to monstrosities, from folklore to erotica - there are fathoms of fun for all!
Challenge begins May 1st

Remnants by Kathe Koja DNFStream-of-conscious writing that didn’t grab my attention.
The Pagodas of Ciboure by M. Shayne Bell ★★★★☆
I had never heard of these French forest creatures of crystal and porcelain. I love that the author blended the life, and family estate, of a historical figure with the unique folklore of his country.
The last three days have been nonstop Yellowjackets. Or, more formally, Holy Shit Yellowjackets. Anyone else?
Water Like Broken Glass by Carina Bissett ★★★★☆ “There are many ways to be a witch in this world.”
Said the aspiring dark Yaga to the rusalka. Set during WW2 in the forests of Russia, two women find their power amongst great violence.
It’s a touch last minutes but I was thinking of tossing out June’s book of the month to the entire group for suggestions. Just for June, then we go back to Only Contributors Make Suggestions.
Just finished binge watching Halo! It was unexpectedly great and I haven’t played video games since Tetris.
