Ori, That sounds very familiar. She loved to set you up to fail. It is not the situation that was a the problem it was her statement that made things go wrong. But the only failure is the failure to try. As long as you try you have not failed, you may not have succeeded but you haven't failed.

I think in that situation it means he tried so hard that she felt obliged to eat it. It does not matter whether it was palatable or not. Chances are it wasn't.
