The Dark Forest (274 new)

110998 So, they moved on. There were even more little plant-men now, and Dae started regretting the fact he didn't exactly have an ability to levitate. Trees grew closer too and it seemed to be getting darker.
Suddenly, out of the corner of his eye Dae noticed a dark shadow move from one tree to another. He blinked.

110998 "Oh, I will. Just you wait." Dae smirked and continued his stroll in the direction of the stream, wondering what other 'weirdness' will cross their path next.
110998 Riin thought for a moment, trying to figure out what part of her speech the 'Why?' question referred to.
"I came here to greet you..." She started and then gave out a small laugh. The woman was definitely not asking her why she 'got in here'.
"Why I'm a Keeper is a very long story. Might tell you sometime when you're done with your Quest. About your own wish you probably know better than anyone... And if you are asking about me helping you - well, those are the rules of this place. I wasn't the one who invented them. I'm just following what Crimson Witch and her Cat told us to do..."
Why were they following these rules? That was a good question indeed. But Riin quickly shook her head to free it of unneeded thoughts. Doubt rarely led to good results.
110998 "Oh, I just did." Riin faded out a bit and then returned back to her full form and color to demonstrate better.
"Welcome to the Labyrinth. I'm the White Keeper, Riin." The girl curtsied with a smile. "To get your wish granted you need to pass through a number of... rooms, if you'd like to call them that, safely. Some are a bit... bigger, though. If you are in trouble or do not know what to do next, you can ask me for help three times. All you need to do is call me." She shrugged. "But I'll be around watching you, anyways."
110998 "Who's April?" Sounded a curious girl's voice somewhere behind Melina.

Straight lines crossed the table dividing the surface into neat square blocks. There was a similar pattern on the plate too.
110998 The Right Gargoyle and the Left - who squeezed his head back out of the stone pillar just at that moment - followed Melina with a long gaze and then giggled loudly without restraint. When they finally could gasp for breath and actually get some air in their stony lungs, both without even looking at each other made a dive - leaving all the world's best synchronized swimmers awe-struck - into the surface of the Gates and disappeared.

The first room inside wasn't all too big. It was a hall of some building, a square-cut space with minimum furniture and light. Every item in the room, every decor had a distinct geometric form. Even fruit and berries on a perfectly square plate weren't freely misshaped by the forces of nature: those were carefully selected oranges - neatly round and positively orange - and red currant.

110998 "Oh, you haven't seen even a tiny-winy bit of it all yet." He rolled his eyes.
110998 As soon as Melina reached the Gates, the gargoyles set in motion once again.

The Right Gargoyle rolled his eyes at the girl and boomed in a low and somewhat screechy voice. “And the Gates are opening… Find your way through, complete the Quest, get one wish…” He sighed and scratched the base of his tail with his claw. “Bla bla…”

“Oh, c’mon, bro. You don’t have to ‘xplain all that…” The Left Gargoyle giggled crazily. “That’s a Keeper’s job.”

“Yeah. So, go on, missy. We don’t have all day, you know.” The Right one groaned grumpily.

“Yeah!” Squeaked the Left one. “Move your… human legs…!” He made a walking gesture with his splayfooted lower limbs and almost fell off the Gates’ pillar if not for a pair of tattered bat-like winds on his back.

“Does she look like a human to you?!” Boomed the Right one in exasperation. “Dimwit…”

“WHOM YOU CALLING A DIMWIT?!!!” The squeaky gargoyle was shaking with rage. “YOU… YOU…”

“Bah… Dimwit.” Confirmed the Right Gargoyle boldly and licked one eye with a long tongue.

The Left shut up in an instant and wiggled back into the stone surface up to his horns, deeply offended.

110998 "I want to? Nope. Just concerned for your well-being." His cheeks turned slightly red, but that was difficult to notice in the dim light coming through the high crowns for the trees. At least Dae hoped so.
"Off we go then!" He spun around quickly and continued through the thicket of little green plants. The plant-men hurried to get out of his way, creating green waves around as if Dae was a rock thrown in a pond on a windless day.

110998 "Want to hold my hand or something?" Dae asked with a little mocking smirk and offered the girl his hand.

Dim magic light slowly flared up deep in the ancient writings on the Gates once again and then in a flash of greenish fire two figures started forming on both sides of it.
First came the snouts, pushing their way out through the stone surface of the Gates as if carved by an invisible giant hand. Then came the rest of the heads, with big flap ears, convoluted horns and a variety of teeth and fangs in deformed chaps. The creatures wiggled and made a few more inches out of the stone. Soon there were claws and paws, wings and tails, and hoofs, and more furry, scaly and simply bare skin visible.

Both gargoyles sighed and solemnly announced in a deep screechy and scratchy and dubiously discordant unison.
"MELINA MIKAELSON IS NOW TO PROCEED TO THE LABYRINTH! GATES WILL BE OPENING IN FIVE!"
"Repeat…" Squeaked the Left Gargoyle with as much emotion a loudspeaker could possibly have.
"MELINA MIKAELSON IS NOW TO PROCEED TO THE LABYRINTH!" The both creatures repeated in a more disturbing chorus.

110998 "What's more, they prefer high humidity, so if they're here, we're on the right track to the stream." Dae nodded to his thoughts he just spoke out loud.

110998 "Yup, they just did." Dae grinned from ear to ear, enjoying the reaction. "They are mischievous among themselves, pinching each other for no apparent reason, but they get cold feet... Well, roots, that is.... at a sight of a stranger." The man threw another cone further away and more rustling followed. "Completely harmless."

110998 Dae picked up a cone and threw it into the greenery. Dozens of little green arms sprang out, trying to catch the cone, pushing and kicking, picking fights and the chaotic rustling continued.
The man chuckled audibly and the movement stopped abruptly, the little green things cowardly pretending to be just ordinary forest plants.

110998 What happened to Booth and Henry, by the way?
They went North - eaten by mermaids or something? XD

110998 The sigh the girl let out did not escape his notice and Dae smiled. "Yes, we are. You are simply not used to observing all the small details the place has to offer."
He pointed to the greenery below. The leaves seemed to be moving in small but chaotic waves, almost trembling, not really responding to the gusts of wind sometimes blowing through the forest.

110998 "The general philosophy of the island... Well, without a dash of logic... States that every way is the right way here." He made a very smart face. "Just depends on how much time you spend on your trip, which can be shortened or prolonged if this place's magic - or maybe the will of the Lost Gods - decides that you definitely have to spend n hours more or less going this or that way. And, of course, on how good you are in surviving through different situations. There was once a dwarf..." Dae switched his attention to studying their surroundings.

110998 Dae sniffed the air, spun around, stopped at a particular point and stretched his arm out indicating the general direction. "Walk this way, ma'am." He grinned and strolled off to where he believed the stream was.
