Bodice ripper is a pejorative term for romance in general that has been recycled to refer to a specific sub-genre of historical romance. Epic in scope and usually featuring more violent sexual content, bodice rippers are the books that ushered in the era of the modern romance novel. Generally published in the 1970s and 1980s.

[close] *Romance Readers who love Happily Ever Afters* If this describes you, then you've come to the right place. We love to chat about romance novels, humorous book passages (whether intentional or cringe-worthy purple prose), steamy love scenes, available freebie and cheapie novels, crazy cover art, questions about possible TBR books, and anything and everything in between. We give and receive tons of great recommendations and hope you'll share your favorites here, too. All subgenres and heat levels are welcome, but HEAs are pretty much mandatory. ;) Please note that our group is for readers of romance. Active users who are also authors who want to promote their books may post their promo in the specific author thread only. We aim for our refuge to be a drama-free zone, so please respect the group rules and play well with others. We look forward to chatting about romance with you! P.S. Please remember to confirm your understanding that there are promo rules at the time of your request. Detailed rules will be visible in the group upon approval of the request. Thanks!

[close] Do you enjoy epic romance novels set in exotic locations with aggressive and possessive heroes and spitfire heroines? Whether you hide these "guilty pleasures" in a box in your attic and with deceptive book covers or you proudly display these on your family book shelf and on your coffee table, this group is for you! Every month we will pick a title to read as a group. Be sure to vote in our monthly poll to help choose next month's title! Come chat about your favorites and maybe discover some new (to you) gems! Warning: Books read and discussed by this group may contain overbearing heroes, unruly heroines, drama galore, big misunderstandings, long separation of H/h, bucket loads of sexual tension, kidnapping, possible cheating and/or possible forced seduction and/or rape. There's no concrete definition or grocery list of elements that make something a bodice ripper. It's all subjective and, like porn, we know it when we see it. ;D It's a genre that broke the rules, so it's only logical that it shouldn't follow any.
