We have power, control, and true vision in our own world. Enjoy the structure in our miniature lives on the page—for the larger world beyond our work is far from neat and tidy like the realm that fits conveniently between two covers of a notebook or published tome. Also great about being a writer is getting to connect with other writers and readers: you realize that while writing can be such a solitary act in the process of creating, in truth, it is a portal into a larger, more expansive realm of creators than you could hope. I once had a college professor who claimed, “no one likes to write. Everyone likes to have written.” I can understand what she means, but I do take pleasure in the personal time I give myself to write. What I love, being more of an introvert than anything else, is that writing gives me a legitimate reason to be alone. Do I sound like I use “I’m writing” as an excuse? So be it. But, again, and as aforementioned, also excellent about being a writer is knowing that, when I’m ready to return to reality, I have sundry likeminded artists out there willing to inspire, encourage, and critique my work—or to have me do the same. So, being a writer is about bonding with the self and society alike. It’s a therapy you give yourself; it’s a gift you can only hope to give other people who care one day.(less)

You will never write well if you are not a voracious reader. Record your favorite lines. Study not just plot-summary but, also, character development, structure, and language choices. Consider style and voice. And then, once you’ve filled yourself with options, write often and as much as you can in one sitting. Let things gel; give yourself time off. I find that most of the “best writing” happens in the in-between spaces when I’m not sitting at my desk. I write in the shower, on the train, in bed—I sometimes jot down notes once I get to a notebook; or a talk to myself via voice memos on my phone. But just do it—write. Don’t apologize for or explain what you do, either: there is no justification for writing anything aside from the truth that the story is in you and you’re simply giving it a new life in written form.(less)
