Tootles

[close] Tootles is a Lost Boy who fell out of his pram and taken to Neverland by Peter Pan. He is described as the most unfortunate and humblest of the group, because “the big things” and adventures happen while “he has stepped around the corner”. Due to his nature he asks Peter to kill him after he unwittingly shoots Wendy out of the sky. He’s is sweet but clumsy and is often depicted in film as being overweight despite there being no literary evidence of this. Tootles takes Smee’s place as boatswain after Peter takes possession of The Jolly Roger. At the end of Peter Pan he makes a choice to become adopted by the Darling family and grows up to become a judge.

There are many different spin-off stories involving Tootles and his origins. In Peter Pan in Scarlet , as an adult, he goes back to Neverland and turns into a girl due to borrowing his daughter’s clothes to become young again. Tootles later finds his real father who also turns out to be a judge.

Peter and the Secret of Rundoon , which takes place before Peter Pan, Tootles was a boy from St. Norbert’s orphanage who used to be a slave for King Zarboff. Along with the other well-known Lost Boys he ends up going to Neverland with Peter.

In Disney’s 1953 film Nibs wears a skunk costume and does not return to London to grow up and decides to stay with Peter. In Hook Tootles appears as an old man as one of the ‘orphans’ Granny Wendy found homes for but lives with Wendy because she didn’t want to put him in a home despite him having become someone senile. In the story one of the new Lost Boys gives Peter a bag of marbles to return to Tootles in London. When Tootles receives the marbles some fairy dust spills out and he flies out the window.
