Initially a one-off villain in World's Finest Comics #6, George Grant was a scientist who used a suit of armor he called Metalo. This character made one additional appearance. This character made one additional appearance in The Superman Family #217.
The Silver Age Metallo was John Corben. He was a criminal who killed a man and made it look like a suicide by wiping the gun and putting it in his victim's hand, although e neglected the bullets. He accidentally drove off a cliff, but was found by Professor Vance and his housekeeper, Edith. Vance rebuild much of Corben's body using metals with plastic flesh. He required daily batteries of uranium in order to live, but they must be replenished each day. A rockslide triggers a stroke in Vance before he can tell Corben the other possibility. Corben takes a job at the Daily Planet, and when is body is revealed to be bullet proof, shaves his mustache to pretend he is Superman's secret identity.
