As a dog lover and Veterinary Technician, it hurt to read the neglect and abuse. But those tears turned to happiness and then to sadness. My opinion was that you really understood dogs. (read my review) I wondered where this writer had been hiding? 8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter?!?! Not my thing at all. Then I enjoyed A Dog's Journey and Emory's Gift, then finally read 8 Simple Rules, really disappointing after the first 3 I read. I've not yet read The Dogs of Christmas, looking forward though, (too many books on my lists) and I do want to read The Midnight Plan... I doubt I'll read any more How to... or Rules..., just not something I'm interested in (even though when I like an author, I try to read everything)

Do you think A Dog's Purpose is too sad to read to my seventh grade students? I just finished reading A Monster Calls to them, which is REALLY sad. I do know that my kids got a lot out of A Monster Calls, and they, yes, 12-year-olds, LISTENED with rapt attention while I read it out loud to them.

I want to read this because the reviews are so wonderful and yet I'm afraid that it will be too painful. I'm still suffering from the loss of my dog 14 months ago. Perhaps after I've had another dog for a while, I'll "man up" and face the book head-on. Is it very sad? Does it contain abuse of the dog?

There wasn't …moreI read this book when it first became clear that my late dog (who was my first pet as an adult) was near the end. I found it comforting. There wasn't any actual abuse but in his first incarnation, I got frustrated with Señora because she put him in danger in a way I've seen too often with rescues. I guess a lot depends on you and how you react to these things.(less)
