Angels are definitely seen as important and necessary to the story. Angels are important to the characters since they are half angel. I'm a Catholic and I know how you feel about not wanting to disrespect your religion and I feel as if this book doesn't do that. They sometimes mention God or the Bible but never mock or disrespect it. This is more fiction than anything. Hope this answers your question! (less)
