She was a lot of trouble and after Riggs raped her (I’m assuming she was raped by the description of the condition that Rill found her in), I’m thinking she was just disposed of. Although I was praying she was actually Grandma Judy. (less)

While Rill is a fictional character, these types of acts happened to actual real life children for years. Should they have just spoken up?! Give me a break. As stated in the book, Miss Tann had a lot of influence and power in her community. Rill would most likely not have been believed, the person might not care, or if they did care they wouldn't be able to help her due to Miss Tann's power, just like the time she did speak up. Many grown women who speak up in 2018 are not believed, ridiculed or told it's their fault for a rape or mistreatment. Do you really think a 12 year of in the 30s would get a better result. Wow, wow, wow. I was not at all frustrated with her, instead I was heart broken for her and cheering her own to get out of that hell hole. Have some compassion. (less)

"Who chooses the schedules we keep? We do, I guess, she tells herself but excuses this with, "the good life demands a lot of maintenance." I think with the discovery of her grandmothers extended family and the bond they had being with each other made her reevalulate her schedule and priorities. Her life seemed pretty empty and she felt it. I think she believes her dads health had improved and he had support. She felt that being a senator was his life not hers. She did not need to save anyone but herself. (less)
