asked:
The author never really addressed what happened to Camillia. Or did I miss it?

I believe she was killed. She was a lot of trouble and after Riggs raped her (I’m assuming she was raped by the description of the condition that Rill found her in), I’m thinking she was just disposed of. Although I was praying she was actually Grandma Judy.

I concluded that we will never know, just as many of the children were lost and no one ever knew what happened to them. So we are feeling conflicted about what happened to her even though we have a suggestion what happened to her. I believe the author wants us to feel uncertain, just as family members are uncertain during those times.

It left me with the strong impression that she was murdered, I agree that the author left it open to give its readers a sence of what it must have been like for these people that went through this

I think the author purposely left it open. So many children were affected in ways we may never know. Truly more "unknown's" revolve around the unspeakable horrors of the Tennessee Children's Home than we will ever imagine. I thought how the author used the dragon fly bracelet to signify the complete loss of being able to find a trail that would ever lead them to find the three missing siblings was genius. So much spoken in the symbolism.

No, you didn't miss it, the narrator never knew, and consequently neither did the readers. It is hinted at that she fell victim to foul play or was shipped off some place else because she was too much trouble, and had the wrong hair color.

When Tann threatened Rill to never say there were originally 5 siblings, only 4, I took that to mean she was killed. Other children were adopted out yet no one was asked to deny they were ever there. I do think this needed more closure/explanation.

Camille was a lot of trouble and had no hope of adoption ()she was not ever taken to the baby showings). After she was raped by Riggs, they put her in the tub and she fought. Whoever was bathing her was tired of fighting her and she called for Riggs to come and bring a rope. She was then hanged in the closet.
Laura
You would think that Rill/May would be crying for days , that Camilla was dead. It was hardly mentioned.
Dayna
I believe she was killed.

I believe it was understood that she was killed by Riggs. (I listened to the audiobook, so I'm not sure of spelling.) Had she been adopted, I imagine Reel would've been able to find that out from the workers.

The older boys said she was put in truck and hauled to swamp like all the other dead!

Camilla was raped while her siblings were being “shown” and then when the staff wanted to clean her up, she panicked and they put her in the closet to punish her and she died there. Then her body was disposed of, possibly dumped in the river. Then they tried to brainwash Rill/May by telling her there were only 4 children in the original family.
