My own response about Africans, both in Africa and in diaspora, has been unhappy. This book, however, has elicited a very positive response, though it explores many of the same issues that the others have. The difference seems to be the lyrical and forthright and non-judgmental point of view of the author. I loved it and wait for another book by Yaa Gyasi(less)

I felt like Marjorie had grown. From the time she quoted her poem and said goodbye to Old Lady there were fourteen years to accept her heritage and her life in America and the fact that she had a foot on two continents. The last events shared her joy with Sonny. He was more or less baptized in the Atlantic and in his own ocean of fears as she blessed him with the weighty stone. Relationship can heal bitterness. Many of the characters figured out things of their lives in relationship with another. I think the stone was a symbol for heavy history that must be worn and acknowledged not hidden and forgotten.(less)
