Make #timetoread on National Readathon Day! (U.S.)

Posted by Ami on January 20, 2015
Grab your latest book and charge your ereaders, bibliophiles. It's time for the first-ever National Readathon Day. On Saturday, January 24, join readers across America to make #timetoread for four hours in solidarity for literacy. (Of course, if you live outside the U.S. and want to make #timetoread, too, please join in!)

National Readathon Day, sponsored by Goodreads, the National Book Foundation, Penguin Random House, and Mashable, is a nationwide marathon reading session on Saturday, January 24th from noon-4 p.m. (in respective time zones) and a fundraiser for The National Book Foundation’s literacy programs.

Get involved on Goodreads by pledging to read any book you’d like. Visit our Readathon Challenge to share your selection with the rest of the Goodreads community. We‘ll add the book you choose to your “to-read” shelf (if it's not already there) and also add it to a special readathon-day-2015 shelf, where you can see everyone's Readathon picks site-wide!

Maybe you’re in the middle of something so good, you want four hours to finish it. Or perhaps there’s a novel that’s been on your to-read shelf for weeks that you’ve just been waiting for an excuse to start. If you need some suggestions, we’ve also shared our list of the best books of January.

If you’d like to get involved offline, check here for a list of “reading party” events. These events will be held at libraries, bookstores, and schools across the country and have been created so the community can come together to share their love of books!

Where will you be making #timetoread this Saturday? Share it with us in the comments below!

Plethora M Lynn --- yes that lovely auto correct gets me all the time. I end up with some odd things all the time as well because I'm almost always posting from a device that thinks it is smarter and knows what I meant to say. Sometime I get a complete kick-out of what it changes things to, but usually it just annoys the heck out of me. I'm constantly having to edit post for weirdness posted.

Heather, my point was more about describing something as 'national' on an international site. 'National' only means 'American' in a group of Americans - not an international group (it means 'British' to me, for instance!). To begin with, this readathon wasn't specified as 'U.S.', and the post was simply talking about 'nationwide' rather than 'across America' - but since several of us commented on this, it has been edited to clarify this, and I appreciate that. Thanks, Goodreads staff! :-)

message 217: by Maria (new)

Maria I finally finished the book I pledged, The Goldfinch. It was a long one, therefore I needed more than the 4 hours to finish. It was fun participating!

message 218: by Pauline (new)

Pauline I finished The Silmarillion yey! it took more than four hours and i didn't get to start last Saturday but hey, I did it! :)

message 219: by Suzannah (new)

Suzannah I wasn't able to read the entire book. But, I started Cinder, by Marissa Meyer and so far I am enjoying it! I convinced two of my siblings to come with me and we went a local library that was hosting it. I think we were the only ones that showed up but it was still wonderful! They had hot cider, hot chocolate, and a pumpkin spice drink for us as well as cookies and finger foods. It was all delicious! Plus, we each were able to pick out a free book from a box of little gifts they had as door prizes. And they gave us each a little notebook. It was amazingly fun. Thank you so much GoodReads for posting about National Readathon day or else I wouldn't have known that it existed! #timetoread
