The 2012 Goodreads Choice Awards—Open for Voting!

Feeling choosy? What's the best book you read this year? Pick your favorites in 20 categories by voting in the 2012 Goodreads Choice Awards, the only major book awards decided by readers—that's you! Junot Díaz is duking it out with Barbara Kingsolver in Best Fiction. Arab Spring activist Wael Ghonim is up against best-seller Cheryl Strayed in Best Memoir. Will Tudor expert Hilary Mantel slay international man of mystery Carlos Ruiz Zafón in Best Historical Fiction? It will be a fight to the finish until the polls close November 27!
To begin the Opening Round, we've nominated 15 books in each category. Instead of consulting publishing experts or a judging panel, we look to readers to find the best books of the year. We analyzed statistics from the 170 million books added, rated, and reviewed on the site in 2012 and nominated books based on the number of ratings and average rating. A nomination is truly an honor because it comes straight from the readers! And to make sure every reader has the "choice" he or she wants, the Opening Round also accepts write-in votes.
Who will be the major break-out nominee of 2012? Last year's juggernaut Fifty Shades of Grey picked up speed when it reached the 2011 finals for Best Romance before becoming a viral hit. And our new crop of nominees boasts a larger percentage of indie authors than ever before. Some household names did not even make the cut. J.K. Rowling's The Casual Vacancy and Zadie Smith's novel NW both were just shy of the 3.50 average rating required for an Opening Round nomination (but if you loved those books, don't worry. You can still place a write-in vote!)
You have three chances to vote. The Opening Round lasts until November 10. Vote now to make sure your favorite books make it into the Semifinals.
Don't wait! Vote for the best books of 2012! »

So I guess most November books are semi-screwed? I am fully hoping for Days of Blood & Starlight to be awesome, but people will have to read it within 4 days of the release date to be able to vote for it.
I also have hopes for Renegade, but that's not released until after the opening round is over, so even if I love it I won't be able to throw it in as a write-in (unless there are, like, tons of ARC readers who threw it in, I guess?).

I agree!

EDIT: Okay, I see that it's part of the official rules.
Books published for the first time in the United States in English between November 29, 2011, and November 25, 2012, are eligible for the 2012 Goodreads Choice Awards.
Final Round: November 19 – November 27, 2012
Too Weird!
I realize there are ARC's, etc. but that doesn't seem quite right.

I mean, come on...half the Romance category was ParaRom! Trust me, as much as I like the genre, they are NOT even close to the best romances I read this year...or any other year! And the ParaRom selection? Pitiful.
IMO the best Romances I have read primarily fall into Contemporary/Historical Romances and Erotica (including M/M - which has some of THE best love stories EVER!).
Thanks for letting me have this voice, anyway.

unfortunately since they use certain "popularity" markers to determine eligibility - personally, I don't think PNR should be in romance, since it is essentially been given its own cat with paranormal fantasy - which is supposedly PNR/UF

but basically the gist is GLBT isn't a genre unto itself like romance etc, but those genres can have GLBT as a sub-genre
so if there is a book you want to nominate that is GLBT, do it under the general genre the book would fall under

If you like short stories check out the collection of anthologies from the Columbus Creative Cooperative. All of them are an excellent read.

Nice thought, but that would take all the fun and excitement out of it."

I will never let go of the fact Goodreads was instrumental in launching that God-awful Twific. There should be utter shame for it and yet they wear it like a ba..."
Please tell me that you are not referring to Gabriel's Rapture? I don't follow Twific, so I don't know what started there and what didn't.

Yep. That's Twilight fan fiction.
Oh, and I agree with Dee about the LGBT genre thing. There's such a wide array of books (from YA to erotica) it'd be hard to put them in one place like that.

I hope that doesn't happen!

I absolutely agree about LGBT -- so much of it so beautifully written.
On the other hand :) -- Gabriel's Rapture is a lovely book written by an immensely talented author. I don't get the whole twific thing, except that...50 Shades started there. But whoever Sylvain Reynard is behind his pseudonym, his writing is beautiful and he wrote a cleverly written story. IMHO, of course!
Oh, my gosh, yes! Best series ♥

And I seriously miss a LGBT category. There are awesome books written in this genre and they don't get the attention they deserve.
Suggestion for goodreads: Try next year to add that and keep PNR out of romance.

Jessica has said that there isn't a GLBT category because books that are GLBT fit into many of the other genres that are represented. In fact, the 3rd runner up in the romance category last year was a GLBT book and technically, it isn't a genre - because the presence of a GLBT individual does not make it a genre - they are romances, they are mysteries, they are fantasy etc

Also: given that you have split the Fantasy category (adding a separate category for Paranormal Fantasy), could you not split Fiction into Literary Fiction and Popular Fiction?
Just a thought.

I agree!

LMAO

QFT. Hoping people will get it.

Anna dressed in blood is not a GLBT book its kinda' a horror novel
