The 2012 Goodreads Choice Awards—Open for Voting!

Vote Now in the Opening Round! »

Feeling choosy? What's the best book you read this year? Pick your favorites in 20 categories by voting in the 2012 Goodreads Choice Awards, the only major book awards decided by readers—that's you! Junot Díaz is duking it out with Barbara Kingsolver in Best Fiction. Arab Spring activist Wael Ghonim is up against best-seller Cheryl Strayed in Best Memoir. Will Tudor expert Hilary Mantel slay international man of mystery Carlos Ruiz Zafón in Best Historical Fiction? It will be a fight to the finish until the polls close November 27!

To begin the Opening Round, we've nominated 15 books in each category. Instead of consulting publishing experts or a judging panel, we look to readers to find the best books of the year. We analyzed statistics from the 170 million books added, rated, and reviewed on the site in 2012 and nominated books based on the number of ratings and average rating. A nomination is truly an honor because it comes straight from the readers! And to make sure every reader has the "choice" he or she wants, the Opening Round also accepts write-in votes.

Who will be the major break-out nominee of 2012? Last year's juggernaut Fifty Shades of Grey picked up speed when it reached the 2011 finals for Best Romance before becoming a viral hit. And our new crop of nominees boasts a larger percentage of indie authors than ever before. Some household names did not even make the cut. J.K. Rowling's The Casual Vacancy and Zadie Smith's novel NW both were just shy of the 3.50 average rating required for an Opening Round nomination (but if you loved those books, don't worry. You can still place a write-in vote!)

You have three chances to vote. The Opening Round lasts until November 10. Vote now to make sure your favorite books make it into the Semifinals.

Don't wait! Vote for the best books of 2012! »

Why? I don't always catalogue the books I read, for a myriad of reasons. I disagree with the concept of limiting to voting just because you put it on your read shelf. Also it won't change anybody who is really intent on voting for that particular book.

EA I'm bummed not to see Quintana of Charyn (the amazing finale to the awesome Lumatere Chronicles series) on the list of nominees for YA Fantasy. Books published late in the year get short shrift. :( Let's hope it picks up momentum and makes the list next year. It really is deserving of any love it gets!

message 106: by Serith (new)

Serith I'm going to agree with everyone about adding a GLBTQ section. I get the whole segregation thing (and that is really respectable reason), but when it comes to the results, I probably won't even look at the lists if I have to dig for that information. I mean... I wouldn't sign a petition to have a gay section in a book store (because it causes too much separation), but online lists are a little different. That is how I -and a lot of people in the GLBTQ community- actually find our books. We just love our lists! :P

my understanding is that it hasn't been released in the US yet and won't be until 2013, so it is ineligible - although because 2012 is the programed pub date, it can be written in

so you don't want physical separation but online separation is ok - couldn't it be argued that one potentially leads to another and then you have discrimination (either pro or neg)

See, that is why I'm a little torn on the whole topic! XP It's such a fine -and sometime sensitive- line. I just figure that having a list is more helpful to those that are actually looking for queer books, you know? (...still hella' confusing choice to make, though)

No, but thanks a lot for sharing, Dee! It looks like an amazing source (nice categories too). I'll definitely spend a lot of time digging there. What a treat <3

Lisa Arbitrary - AttentionIsArbitrary M/M Blog If you have YA, why not Erotica? Erotica, unfortunately is the category GLBTQ books typically fall under, but I'm trying to make a point here. If YA is a category for a "different" reader then I think the same could be said for Erotica.

message 132: by Zulfiya (new)

Zulfiya It is a great example of reading democracy and the grassroots movement, but some books are truly pathetic. I am reading some of those nominations now to see whther I have missed something major and keep wondering why or why they are in the list. If people add them or read them, it does not always mean that they are good. Why not balance some expertise with the vox populi and split the presentations in nominations?

message 133: by Marie (new)

Marie That makes too much sense, Zulfiya. Therefore, it won't happen :)

Quintana of Charyn is actually eligible for this year. I was slightly confused since I wanted to vote for Froi of the Exiles which was realeased in March in USA but after trying to vote it said it wasn't eligible for this year. So I voted for Quintana instead which is mysteriously eligible although it won't be published in USA till next March. I guess Goodreads doesn't distinguish between Australian and American realease dates.

So if you want to vote for Quintana, do it now because next year it won't be eligible.

"Halo if the Damned" by Dina Rae
Linda Hays-Gibbs

message 142: by Jason (new)

Jason So...Days of Blood & Starlight is TOTALLY the YA book of the year. I guess it's under YA supernatural. I'm gonna write it in, but I fear given that non-ARC readers have less than a week to vote for it, it'll get unfairly snubbed even though the great (but not as amazing as DoBaS) first book was nominated for Book of the Year.

Ian I don't approve, in fact, of such a vote. I mean, has everyone read all of the books nominated? If I were to read all of the books nominated, would that change the book I would vote the best?

This is my concern exactly!! I still haven't read this book and feel certain based on the first one that it will be nothing short of extraordinary. So why does this award process begin so early? Books that are released later in the year deserve a fair shot as well. I feel uncomfortable voting now as some of my favourite authors have yet to release and the nominations therefore feel unfairly incomplete. I feel like I'm betraying some of the authors/characters/books I've come to love that are excluded from this process because of their late release date.
