February's Hottest New Romances

Posted by Cybil on February 1, 2022

Some people love books. Some people fall in love. And some people love books about falling in love. Every month our team sorts through the new romance books and sees how early readers are responding. We use this information to curate a list of soon-to-be-beloved favorites.

New in February: Marooned lovers meet cute in Josie Silver’s One Night on the Island. Two lonely musicians make a connection in Ashley Schumacher’s Full Flight. And a quarantine order complicates multiple love stories in Beth ReeklesLockdown on London Lane. Also: witches, lycanthropes, and crazy rich Latinos.

Add what catches your fancy to your Want to Read shelf and let us know what you're reading and recommending in the comments.

Mackenzie "Mac" Cabot is doing just fine with her internet business, but at the insistence of her parents, she’s agreed to pursue a college degree at swanky Garnet College in Avalon Bay. The townies don’t particularly like the wealthy college kids, but one local bad boy – Cooper Hartley – takes an interest in Mac. She takes an interest back. Friendship blossoms into love, but threatens to wilt away when Mac discovers Cooper’s terrible secret.

How’s this for a meet-cute: London dating columnist Cleo has booked a private luxury cabin on a remote Irish island for a week of relaxation and reflection. Upon arrival, she discovers that Boston native Mac has booked the same cabin for the same week. Someone screwed up the schedule, but the ferry has already departed and won’t be back for a week. Depending on genre, this story could go a number of ways, but since it’s a Josie Silver romance, it’s sure to be fun.

Author Beth Reekles (The Kissing Booth) draws inspiration from current events in Lockdown on London Lane, which chronicles the fallout among various tenants when a quarantine order is imposed on a block of apartments. As the narrative splits off to tell multiple stories, we learn of relationships in peril, an extended bridesmaid’s party, and a one-night stand suddenly turned into a six-night stand.

The popular and steamy queer rom-com series Written in the Stars gets a third installment with Count Your Lucky Stars, the latest from Alexandria Bellefleur (Frostbite). Margot Cooper and Olivia Grant never expected to see one another again. Childhood friends, each grew up to be the other’s first love before cruel fate pulled them apart. Ten year later, fate is now apparently set on bringing them back together. Can you get a second chance at first love? Is that even allowed?

New York City photographer Delilah Green is not interested in going home. Her childhood in the oppressive small town of Bright Falls doesn’t hold many happy memories. But a successful guilt trip from her sister Astrid brings her back anyway, where she is reacquainted with Astrid’s hot best friend Claire Sutherland. Probably it’s a bad idea, but bad ideas can be fun. Bonus trivia: Author Blake’s YA novel Girl Made of Stars was a Lambda Literary Award finalist.

Catherine Cowles, author of the Wrecked and Sutter Lake series, returns with Tattered Stars, the first installment of a new set, Tattered & Torn. Cowles likes to blend contemporary romance with atmospheric suspense, and her new book promises some new variations on the theme. When Everly returns to her hometown of Wolf Gap, she’s going to need all her wits, a backbone of steel, and help from handsome sheriff Hayes Easton.

New York City is a magical place, literally, in Not the Witch You Wed, the new paranormal rom-com from April Asher (the Steele Ops series). Violet Maxwell is a witch without her magic … yet. Lincoln Thorne is a wolf shifter with a supernatural mandate to find a mate. They say that opposites attract, but Violet and Lincoln have tried this before and it didn’t work. Can the two fake it ‘til they make it? We shall see.

Remember your very first love? The one that scrambled your head and broke your heart? That’s the general vibe of Full Flight, the debut novel from Texas author Ashley Schumacher. The Fighting Enfield Marching Band is about to enter contest season. New saxophonist Anna James has been paired in a duet with mellophone player and small-town bad boy Weston Ryan. Their romance is strictly forbidden, which only makes it more fun, until the unthinkable happens.

Celebrity chef Julieta Campos has problems, plural. Her sea-to-table taqueria is in peril, and she’s just discovered that her new landlord is Ramón Montez, the son of the man who stole her mother’s taco recipe years ago. Complicating matters further, she kinda-sorta hooked up with Ramón at the last Day of the Dead celebration. What’s the story like? Veteran romance author Alana Albertson says: “Think Crazy Rich Latinos.”

Author Kosoko Jackson (Yesterday is History) returns with another m/m queer romance, featuring journalist Kian Andrews and his wealthy ex-boyfriend Hudson Rivers. Hudson needs a date for an upcoming society wedding and asks Kian to be his fake partner for the evening. But as so often happens in these situations, the phony romance starts feeling real. Can these two rewrite the ending to their own love story? Let’s find out!
