Sequel to last year’s labyrinthine puzzler The Inheritance Games, the new book from author Jennifer Lynn Barnes continues the odd adventures of high schooler Avery Grambs, surprise recipient of a multi-million dollar fortune. Avery’s mysterious benefactor is gone, but Tobias Hawthorne’s family is still intent on getting the money they think is rightfully theirs. If you liked the movie Knives Out!, there’s a good chance you will dig The Inheritance Games series.
More fun with sharp objects! This third and final installment of the series A Good Girl's Guide to Murder finds teenage investigator/podcaster Pippa Fitz-Amobi in a different kind of trouble. After solving two previous murders, it seems like Pip herself may be the next target. Someone is sending her surveillance videos with the unnerving taunt: “Who will look for you when you're the one who disappears?” Is it just a harmless trolling prankster? The odds seem slim, somehow.
From the author of Caraval comes a new tale in the proud tradition of contemporary fantasy and magical realism. Evangeline Fox was raised in her father’s magical curiosity shop, so she knows all about the immortal Prince of Hearts. He's an unpredictable immortal, and you bargain with him at your own peril. But Evangeline is desperate to stop the love of her life from marrying another. The Prince’s price? Three kisses. That seems straightforward. I’m sure it will be fine.
The first installment in a planned series, author Xiran Jay Zhao’s intriguing sci-fi premise imagines a world where teenage kids are forced to pilot Chrysalises, colossal robots used to fight off giant mecha aliens that lurk behind the Great Wall. But 18-year-old Zetian has a chance to end the madness. Turns out she’s an Iron Widow, a potential savior with the power to end the brutal misogyny and repression of this future dystopia. Bonus fun: Check out Zhao’s author photo.
Australian author C.S. Pacat (Captive Prince) kicks off a new series with a new hero: sixteen-year-old dock boy Will, on the run from the men who killed his mother. In classic Chosen One style, Will is indoctrinated into a world of magic by guardians of ancient lore known as the Stewards. The Dark King is threatening the city of London, and in fact Will is destined to become a central figure in endless cosmic battle between the Light and the Dark.
In the conclusion to The Gilded Wolves series, author Roshani Chokshi beckons readers once again to her inventive world of 19th-century European intrigue and adventure. You’ve got your deadly masquerades, your exiled heroes, your festering plague pits, your haunted Venetian waterways. Chokshi (The Star-Touched Queen) specializes in threading world mythology into her thrilling tales of mystery—in fact, her India-inspired Aru Shah and The End of Time has been optioned for a film adaptation.
Class rage. Rampant corruption. A kingdom torn by vicious partisan divisions. A terrible sickness ravaging the land. If this all sounds rather familiar, that’s on purpose, but it’s also the beginning of a new fantasy series by author Brigid Kemmerer (A Curse So Dark and Lonely). As disease sweeps over the land, an apothecary’s apprentice out in the Wilds decides to do whatever it takes to find a cure for her people. Step one: She plans a daring raid into the royal palace….
The great thing about fantasy books is that, every time you worry there are no more ideas to be wrung from the genre, a talented new writer steps up to open a new trajectory of thinking. This exceedingly cool-sounding debut from Ayana Gray introduces Koffi and Ekon, two Black teenagers in the city of Lkossa who band together to hunt down the Shetani, a fearsome beast who lives in the unknown wilds of the Greater Jungle. Bonus trivia: Author Ayana Gray has an adopted baby rhino named Apollo. No, really.
Billed as a cross between The Haunting of Hill House and the modern horror film classic Get Out, Tiffany D. Jackson’s White Smoke takes the traditional haunted house story into new and uncharted territories. California teenager Marigold has just moved, with her blended family, into the midwestern town of Cedarville. Their new house is nice enough, except for all the poltergeist activity. Then there’s the invisible entity that wants Marigold to—yes, that’s right—get out. Uh-oh.
If you like your science fiction dark and dystopian, you’ll want to consider Steelstriker, the sequel to last year’s SF breakthrough hit Skyhunter. Author Marie Lu conjures a new speculative fiction arena in which the nefarious Karensa Federation has developed a terrible new weapon of war. Captured enemy fighters are transformed into savage lab-grown war beasts known as Ghosts. The bad news? Our heroine Talin Kanami has been captured. The good news? The world’s last free nation isn’t done fighting yet.
