If you click on the article for Common Misconceptions in Romance they have a bunch listed in there under the misconception that the romance genre lacks diversity.

No. Check out The Secret Lives of Romance Authors and Common Misconceptions, Debunked. I agree that there are a lot of straight romance books listed, but many of the articles feature gay romance as well.

There are some really great books about friendships you could read. On of my favorites is A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Housseini. The bond the women in this story form is as indispensable as any romantic relationship.
