The Kate Daniels series sounds interesting, but maybe when I'm not already incredibly behind on reading? (Then again we're all always behind on our "to read" books, aren't we?)

Excellent. Also look at her Innkeeper series.

Innkeeper series didn't do it for me, but their 'Hidden Legacy' was great fun.
'The Edge' series was good too, but heavier on the romance angle. The other two, story line with some romance, rather than romance with some story.
Suggestion, 'Stormwalker' series by Allyson James has a similar feel, and is on-going. [This is the last Kate Daniels, and Hidden Legacy is going into spin-off. The Edge is already complete.]
Can’t wait for Karin Slaughters new book out on the 21st..
