The Illuminae Files are really good! I'm finishing the second book in the trilogy! They black out any explicit language but it doesn't make you feel like you're reading a "baby book". I think your 14 yr old would really enjoy it!

One Of Us Is Lying was really good!
I would recommend
There's Someone Inside Your House by Stephanie Perkins. I had read them both around the same time last year.

Suzy Davies I am reading my own book - "The Cave," Just released on Smashwords, which will be launched on Amazon soon. The Cover Designer is the legendary Sheila Graber! The Cave

Ann Stealing Liberty by Jennifer Froelich is a great little hidden gem. And the second book of the trilogy is about to be published. Great characters in a dystopian society.

Stephanie Re-reading one of my dearest favorites, Anne of Green Gables

message 158: by Janine (new)

Janine I'm going to recommend two great indie YA reads from the last couple of months. Starburner was a great finish of a good series, though I suggest reading the other books first. There's also Renegade Skyfarer, the start of a brand new series. I haven't read The Elysian Prophecy yet, but I've seen quite a few people like it.

message 159: by Anika (last edited Aug 02, 2018 08:42PM) (new)

Anika I think I'll revisit Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo (the first in the Grisha Verse series--it's AMAZING) and maybe Salt to the Sea, one of the best YA books I've ever read! Ooooh! And maybe We Were Liars, too! Yay for YA Week!

message 165: by Juliet (new)

Juliet Smith Garth Nix's Abhorsen series is an excellent YA fantasy series where women are the main protagonists.
Neal Shusterman's Skinjacker Trilogy and Full Tilt are good YA thrillers.
Elizabeth Knox's Dreamhunter duology is a fascinating fantasy/historical fiction where dreams are sold as a commodity.

Library Lady 📚 Finishing "Symptoms of Being Human."

message 167: by Claire (new)

Claire Heaven Just saw on Instagram that Carol Deeley @writeon_fiction has released her book Sandalwood as YA. I've read the original version which was amazing! Can thoroughly recommend this to young readers.

message 168: by Alex (new)

Alex Jennifer (Jen/The Tolkien Gal) wrote: "Why celebrate YA when it's all that's on Goodreads most of the time?"
If you're a Tolkien fan You should try the Britannica trilogy by Carol Deeley. Couldn't be further away from YA. I loved it!

You should try Sandalwood by Carol Deeley. There are two versions, I read the original which was tasteful but definitely older teen. I saw on Instagram she just released a YA version. It might be exactly what you're looking for.

message 170: by Robyn (new)

Robyn Roshni wrote: "Guys my all time favorite book is Jellicoe Road... Any suggestions similar to that one."
You should definitely read Sandalwood by Carol Deeley. The best book of that ilk that I have read this year by far!! There's a new version out that's really clean YA. I read the original and I'd say that was pretty clean too, just maybe for the older teen.

message 171: by Katie (new)

Katie Mauger I'm currently reading an ARC of Girls of Paper and Fire by Natasha Ngan, and really enjoying it so far! In my opinion it's much better than its blurb makes it sound. I thought it sounded a bit like a hybrid of the Hunger Games and the Selection mixed with demons, but it's actually a very well-crafted fantasy world that stands on its own, and is unlike most others I've read about. The main character is not white and not straight, which already makes this book stand out from the horde of usual YA dystopia and fantasy. I'm excited finish reading this book, and to see where this author goes in the future!

Robyn Elias wrote: "Melliott wrote: "Fai wrote: "Are there any suitable reads for a 14 year old? Nothing explicit and no foul language?"

Have you read the Lockwood & Co. series by Jonathan Stroud?"

Marvelous books."

There's a book called Sandalwood by Carol Deeley that is totally a clean read. Make sure you get the YA version, the other one is still what I'd call clean but for an older teen.

message 173: by Carol (new)

Carol Deeley I'm completely blown away to see a couple of recommendations for my book Sandalwood! I released the YA version as an ebook this morning and gave a shout out on Instagram. The paperback should follow along real soon. Really appreciate all the love guys!

The Abhorsen books are some of my all-time favorites! Truly ingenious, beautifully-written books with an astonishingly original setting and phenomenal characters, and one of the first unabashedly feminist fantasy series for younger readers.

I own the Dreamhunter books and have been meaning to read them but haven't gotten around to them yet. They look superb though.

message 185: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Nadia wrote: "I'm re-reading The Raven Cycle for the second time this year, and recommend everyone to do the same."

I don't reread a lot, but that series is even better when you reread it.

Rudrani Ghoshal I swear, as I was scrolling down the page I was thinking to myself, I HAVE READ ALL OF THESE! These books are seriously the best books that I have ever read. Nett Just started rereading the BSC from the beginning last month. I'm trying to read them in order with the spinoffs included.

message 189: by Heather (new)

Heather I wish I had known it was YA week beforehand, I could have planned to read something. I happened to read a YA book a couple days ago (Getting the Boot), but I'm reading Prince Caspian right now.
Not sure when I'll get back into YA.

message 190: by MC (new)

MC Neal Shusterman's Arc of a Scythe series deserves to be in this list!

Manjistha Yeah so I just finished Andy Weir's The Martian and started the Darkest Minds. Kinda late but😅

message 193: by Phil (new)

Phil Gilvin I'm reading Tom Pollock's White Rabbit Red Wolf. Haven't got far in yet but the premise looks excellent: 17-year-old maths prodigy with severe panic disorder has to find his mother's murderer and track down his missing sister . . .

The Dreamhunter duology has some fascinating world building that culminates in wall to wall action later on. Plus, the two female main characters both play vital roles in said action.

message 195: by Juliet (new)

Juliet Smith I would also like to recommend Girls Made of Glass and Snow, which is a feminist retelling of Snow White that is basically a mother/daughter story with a side of a well written F/F romance between said daughter and an intriguing court surgeon (that ends happily.).

message 196: by Juliet (new)
