Cendaquenta Jennifer (Jen/The Tolkien Gal) wrote: "Why celebrate YA when it's all that's on Goodreads most of the time?"

Agree - nothing against YA in small doses but does it really need a spotlight week when it's already almost impossible to avoid?

GR, perhaps after this we could have a week encouraging users to try books aimed at grown-ups for a change? 😋

Jenn P. I'm reading The Ruinous Sweep. The Ruinous Sweep

So true, Cendaquenta. I'm so disillusioned by YA and I'm 20. I'm literally in the target audience and I can't anymore.

I can see what you mean and I am no means in the target audience, they need to do a spotlight on some hidden gems that people should check out

message 81: by Alison (new)

Alison I'm going to re-read The Giver. I read this in 6th grade as required reading 21 years ago, but remember nothing about it. I think it's technically a middle grade children's book....

I recently read Looking for Alaska a few weeks ago, my favorite John Green book (but I haven't read Turtles All the Way Down yet).

message 84: by Cindy (new)

Cindy If Ya is not your thing, why do people bother commenting and complaining? Just move on. It really is that simple. You take away from the enjoyment of others who do like the genre.

Give Dear Martin a read (YA), a good follow up to The Hate U Give.

message 88: by Claire (new)

Claire Yas wrote: "YA is where unimaginative lazy writing come to thrive."

You're thinking of the YA dark ages, back when Twilight was uber-popular and every YA book was tween-porn paranormal romance. Good YA exists. You just gotta know where to look.

You liked The Book Thief, which is YA, and you liked Harry Potter, which is also YA (at least in the later books), so you already have a pretty good idea of where to look for good YA anyway.

message 89: by Kay (new)

Kay Dominic wrote: "At full African anything Africa am in"

We need more of that!

Brittain *Needs a Nap and a Drink* I mean, GR does a horror/thriller week around Halloween. I am not a fan of those usually but I'm not going to complain about it being the top of be feed.

Y'all need to stop being so salty. YA is a genre. It has great, good, bad, and terrible like all genres. You can't just lump them all as juvenile trash.

Unpopular opinion, but, uh, yeah. Don't know why we need to celebrate "YA Week" on here when you can throw a stone IRL and hit some 20something whose "life was changed" by, I dunno, Percy Jackson, or some shit. I'm on Goodreads to talk to people who enjoy reading books beyond Harry Potter & The Hunger Games Trilogy.
