Ten Ways You Know You're a Goodreads Member

Posted by Hayley on September 5, 2017

Goodreads Turns Ten is sponsored by Audible. Enjoy a free book with your trial.

Your Want to Read shelf is out of control. You need to update your reading status. You'd rather be reading your book right now. (Sorry, we'll let you get back to that in a minute!)

You're here on Goodreads because, like us, you love books. And if your love of reading borders on obsession, don't worry—you're definitely not alone. We're all a little obsessed here.

For our Goodreads Ten-Year Anniversary Celebration, we asked you to complete this sentence: You know you're a Goodreads member when…

Your top answers are below. Check them out and then tell us what makes you a Goodreads member in the comments.

1. "Your husband looks at you funny when you give him four out of five stars after he's done mowing the lawn." -Elizabeth

2. "Your Want to Read pile is taller than Mount Everest." -Kate

3. "You obsessively hype up Goodreads to every single person you know. It's like the happiest cult I've been a part of. Anytime someone mentions anything to do with books, I say, 'You know what would help with that? Goodreads.'" -Carolyn

4. "You recommend all your books to your friends and then smile when you see the same book pop up on THEIR to-read lists!" -Allison

5. "You can't start a book without immediately going to the app or website to change the book from 'to read' to 'currently reading.'" -Kristin

6. "You type 'goo' into your browser, and Goodreads comes up before Google." -Alex

7. "Your friends check your Goodreads profile for gift-giving purposes." -Angie

8."You update your reading status before going to bed every night." -Lana

9. "You mentally rate the book while you are reading it, constantly changing the rating based on how impressed you are with the book. 'Three stars. Wow! Four stars at least… Now this brings it down to two… Not bad, four stars again… That was a solid five stars!'" -Vlada

10. "You check your Reading Challenge like it's the stock market." -Tessa

message 260: by Len (new)

Len Evans Jr 7/10 here... 2,3,5,6,8,9 and 10!
2 - my "Want to read" shelf is so big I would have to live to be way over a hundred to finish it as long as I read at least 365 books a year.
3 - my friends are so over hearing about Goodreads that their eyes get a sort of glassy stare the minute I say anything book-related
5 - Must immediately update to currently reading... cannot start book without it
6 - Google... what's that?
8 - Last thing before bed... makes sure updates are current and all notifications are checked.
9 - Not only keep score on rating... also add cool quotes.
10 - I get such a huge thrill every time I finish a book and see the total number of books read go up one more!

message 261: by Melanie (new)

Melanie Meyer when in conversations you hear the words "book" or "goodreads" or "harry potter" and the person speaking automatically has your full attention.

message 262: by [deleted user] (new)

Okay, I do 9 out of these 10. I can't do the first one since I'm single but damn, this is so me! <3

message 263: by Wissal (new)

Wissal Boujnah 3 and 5 are so true

message 264: by Mukta (new)

Mukta D This is so true. Its 2, 3, 5, 6, and 10 for me. Being on goodreads is like walking around in a bookstore, too bad I can't smell any of the pages! Alas, life shows you a ton of books and gives you a minuscule amount of time to spend reading all of them.

message 265: by Katherine (new)

Katherine 2,5,6 are so definitely me!!!!! Happy 10th birthday! You're awesome!

Cora I would rather read than most anything. And I hope my husband never sees how many books I have purchased and shown as read on Goodreads. It might put me on the bad list... and Christmas is coming up.. lol. Thank you Goodreads for helping me with my obsession.

message 270: by Gary (new)

Gary R. Yeah, me too! I have purchased lots, and reading is better than the crap on TV these days!

message 271: by Kerstin (new)

Kerstin Susan wrote: "I am 9 out of 10 stars on that list. I haven't gotten into the habit of updating my reading status nightly. But maybe that is because I've read 211 books so far in 2017? Why update my status when I..."

message 276: by Greg (last edited Sep 13, 2017 07:59AM) (new)

Greg (adds 2 TBR list daily) Hersom #1. Doesn't work for me cause I don't have a husband and I don't tell my wife how many books I buy.

message 277: by Felix (new)

Felix Check all but 1 and 7.

Same! :)

message 280: by Pat (last edited Sep 13, 2017 08:22AM) (new)

Pat Parkhurst Most of these are definitely true for me. I leave my goodreads page open the majority of the time. I use my app obsessively! I update where I'm at reading a book usually daily. If only my local library could connect and somehow have the books I MUST READ in their circulation!! I LOVE love the questions and authors comments about a book. I LOVE the reviews that differ as it forces me to think outside my box. Looking at my "To Read" list from when I first joined Goodreads, I find that it's interesting how some of my interests change and some remain the same.
Happy Anniversary Goodreads!!! Here's to 10 more!!
**FYI since FB stresses me out so much I now spend that time I would have spent reading people's bla bla blas, on Goodreads. So much more fulfilling!!

message 281: by Patty (new)

Patty #3 That's what I tell people!

message 282: by Sumeet (new)

Sumeet Mahendra That's really wonderful.

message 287: by Ulla (new)

Ulla Alex (PaperbackPiano) wrote: "Ah yay, my comment made it!! I was number 6! My excitement about this is yet further evidence of my obsession."

certainly the best indicator!

MJ Codename: ♕Duchess♕ I don't even have type "goo". G brings it up right away.

message 289: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly Hicks OMG, I agree with each of those answers up top. Especially, checking my reading challenge like it's the stock market, and I rate a book the entire time I'm reading. Also you know you're a member, when I talk about Goodreads to anyone who will listen. And when I discover they're not on here, I'm like, OMG, what is wrong with you? You've got to join!

message 290: by Bredi (new)

Bredi Varfaj number 10 is so funny

message 291: by Navid (new)

Navid Asmari Saadabad 6, definitely 6

message 292: by rashmi (new)

rashmi _n_ kadam You know you're a Goodreads member when you start planning your new year according to Goodreads reading challenge!!!

message 293: by Peni (new)

Peni I would have to say some of those indications are also mine but I would replace the current reading and status ones with: I check the Goodreads reviews before purchasing any books. First thing I do when I purchase a new book is record it in Goodreads. Right after finishing a story, I update and review it in Goodreads. I look everyday to see what my friends are posting in my feed.

message 294: by Mariana (new)

Mariana Gonzalez sooooooo number 5

message 295: by Laura (new)

Laura 2,3,5,6 (I only need to write g) ,9,10

message 296: by Laureen (new)

Laureen I have little time for reading but I read with coffee in the morning, read in work lunchtime, hang out on a Goodreads when the TV news is on. The little spare time I have is spent on Goodreads and I am forever trying to get people engaged on a Goodreads.

Goodreads had been my saviour from loneliness and I love it maybe too much. It is an obsession and I just wish I could read every book mentioned by friends but my "to read" list is so huge, it would take a lifetime already.

message 297: by Sasha (new)

Sasha 2, 3, 6 and 10 are me. and for 6, it comes at go itself :D

message 298: by Petar (new)

Petar 5, 9 and 10 - totally me! :D

message 299: by Nicolene (new)

Nicolene Goertz For sure number 2. I hope I will one day clean out my "want to read" list!

BollywoodNewsFlash Well, my favorites are 2, 6, 12. I feel pride being a goodread member as love to read anything comes afresh always!!
