Ten Ways You Know You're a Goodreads Member

Posted by Hayley on September 5, 2017

Goodreads Turns Ten is sponsored by Audible. Enjoy a free book with your trial.

Your Want to Read shelf is out of control. You need to update your reading status. You'd rather be reading your book right now. (Sorry, we'll let you get back to that in a minute!)

You're here on Goodreads because, like us, you love books. And if your love of reading borders on obsession, don't worry—you're definitely not alone. We're all a little obsessed here.

For our Goodreads Ten-Year Anniversary Celebration, we asked you to complete this sentence: You know you're a Goodreads member when…

Your top answers are below. Check them out and then tell us what makes you a Goodreads member in the comments.

1. "Your husband looks at you funny when you give him four out of five stars after he's done mowing the lawn." -Elizabeth

2. "Your Want to Read pile is taller than Mount Everest." -Kate

3. "You obsessively hype up Goodreads to every single person you know. It's like the happiest cult I've been a part of. Anytime someone mentions anything to do with books, I say, 'You know what would help with that? Goodreads.'" -Carolyn

4. "You recommend all your books to your friends and then smile when you see the same book pop up on THEIR to-read lists!" -Allison

5. "You can't start a book without immediately going to the app or website to change the book from 'to read' to 'currently reading.'" -Kristin

6. "You type 'goo' into your browser, and Goodreads comes up before Google." -Alex

7. "Your friends check your Goodreads profile for gift-giving purposes." -Angie

8."You update your reading status before going to bed every night." -Lana

9. "You mentally rate the book while you are reading it, constantly changing the rating based on how impressed you are with the book. 'Three stars. Wow! Four stars at least… Now this brings it down to two… Not bad, four stars again… That was a solid five stars!'" -Vlada

10. "You check your Reading Challenge like it's the stock market." -Tessa

Storm Arashi I really just need to wipe my currently reading clean. Most of the ones I have listed I'm not actually reading right now.

And my TBR definitely needs some sprucing.

message 152: by Mohammedrabiu (new)

Mohammedrabiu Abdullahi I'm bless and proudly of been a member's. Congratulations to the Co-founders and all members. You means a lot!

Burn After Reading You know you're a Goodreads member when you make your own bookmarks and you put your Goodreads URL on the back and purposely leave them in Library books to promote the site as well as your own account.

message 154: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Number 6 is sooooo me lol

message 155: by Alissa (new)

Wow! I thought 600+ was a lot!!!

message 158: by Avarill (new)

Avarill Hi, I rate as I read as well as review mentally as I read. I love Goodreads when I receive ideas on books I might enjoy, and never miss checking the book being read for the month. I seldom find them but for sure keep track of them

message 159: by Samantha (new)

Samantha Andy wrote: "Amazing list! ^^

Totally agree with 5, 6, 9, 10 with a little bit of 3 ..."

Number 10 killed me XD.The minute you see you're one book behind, you start stressing like never before!

message 160: by Santhi (new)

Santhi not a day passes without me updating my reading progress ;D

message 161: by Kelly (new)

Kelly I love these. I'm definitely 6...and most of the others. :D

message 162: by Joyousmoi (new)

Joyousmoi Definitely numbers 2 and 3 are me!!!

But seriously Goodreads has not only exposed me to genres I previously had no clue existed but the reviews of millions of readers has helped shape my reading character and I'm incredibly grateful!

It deserves a true and long lasting celebration!! :)

message 164: by Ariza (new)

Ariza I resonate with 10 the most; I am so guilty of checking my reading challenge constantly. [In fact, I think I'll go check it now. lol]
You know you're a Goodreads member when: you have more friends on here than on Facebook (or other social network sites).

message 165: by Tweedledum (last edited Sep 08, 2017 05:12PM) (new)

Tweedledum Love these Goodreads "you knows" which pretty much all apply to me too..... Um except no 1.... Is that where I'm going wrong? Hubby's not too keen on mowing .... maybe a should introduce a a star rating.

Great to read everyone's comments here. So GR is 10.... Now where's that bubbly?

message 166: by Tweedledum (new)

Tweedledum Marla wrote: "I put a short cut on my phone to getvto goodreads quickly. And i update my reading status every night. I'm not apart of any book clubs on here, im not sure how. Love the site though!"

Hi Marla the book clubs are mostly easy to join... Just click on and have an explore. I am in the All About Books group which I love and find everyone friendly kind and interesting. Why not pop in sometime.

message 167: by Kawtar (new)

Kawtar Morchid I thought i was the only one who does the 9th one hhhhhhh now, i'm happy it's a commun thing.

message 168: by Sansala (last edited Sep 08, 2017 10:33PM) (new)

Sansala Thiranagamage 2, 3, 5, 6, 9, 10 - that's me!

message 169: by Akshay (new)

Akshay Dasgupta This is so funny but so true. I'm number 8, 9 and 10.

I'm constantly rating a book while i'm reading and i am always checking my and my friend's reading challenge

message 170: by Tesalonica (new)

Tesalonica #10- is driving me a bit crazy. I'm on my first reading challenge: to read 50 books this year, and I am way behind my goal. I keep checking the % and how many books I'm behind, but I want to read for fun, not because I have to :(

message 171: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale I relate to #10 the most.

message 172: by Swan Bender (new)

Swan Bender I know I am a GoodReads member when I check my GoodReads status before I drink my first cuppa in the morning.

message 173: by Swan Bender (new)

Swan Bender I know I am a GoodReads member when I check my GoodReads status before I drink my first cuppa in the morning.

message 174: by Alanah (new)

Alanah 2-10 are all so true!!

message 175: by Rachel (new)

Rachel I'm going to take #10 to the next level . . .

"You get seriously anxious if 24 hours have passed since you posted your completed task on a reading challenge and the moderator hasn't responded with your next task, and your level of anxiety grows and grows until finally you can't take it anymore so you write to the moderators begging for your next challenge task ;)."

{I just discovered that that's me.}

message 176: by A. E. S. (new)

A. E. S. Goodreads is the only comprehensive tool I can use to organize and keep track of the slightly-over-a-thousand books I've read. I'm not even done putting my Stephen Kings on here because it would just take so long! I've eschewed my suggested reading list because I have so many already, so 2 definitely applies to this woman! 3 is me: if only more friends would join! 9 is definitely me: I can usually tell within the first 100 pages whether this book is a sinker or a stinker!

message 177: by Christie (new)

Christie ROFL number 10 for sure (and a lot of the others too). But I get positively stressed about my reading challenge and have to calm myself back down by reminding myself that I still have time and I am in the middle of a bunch of books at once and as soon as I can just finish some the numbers won't look so bad. So far I have gone above my goal each year but this could always be the year that I fail, so I worry. lol as a housewife/mom I have so few visible, permanent achievements to measure that this one has become oddly important to me.

message 178: by Bili (new)

Bili Espada All of them apply to me except for the lawn mowing, I do not have a backyard (lol).
You are a Goodreads member when you see the next book title to read in every sentence of a conversation.

message 179: by Samantha (new)

Samantha 5, 6 and 10 for me. Though Goodreads comes up on 'G' these days:-) xx

message 180: by Janine (new)

Janine Stephanie wrote: "Number 6 - I only type G into my browser and Goodreads comes up. :-)"

Mine too!

message 181: by Aenea (new)

Aenea Jones Number 5 and 8 for me :D

message 182: by Gaylinn (new)

Gaylinn All of those are me. I have my hand on my next book as I am finishing the current one.

message 183: by Sherry (new)

Sherry It's the only way I can keep up with what I've already read!

message 184: by Deepa (new)

Deepa Gera no.2...i wish
5,6,9,10 !! count me in &
9...is jss me ;P

message 185: by Zola (new)

Zola 5, 6, and 9 are me. Also, #11: You can't finish a book without writing a review on it.

message 186: by C. J. (new)

C. J. Scurria Hahahaha! SO much of this was so true! I can relate to so many of these but 3, 8, and 9 I think is the most like me!

message 187: by C. J. (new)

C. J. Scurria -One of your hobbies is "Finding lists on Listopia to share what books I think deserve to be on there."
-You get scared when you think you might not complete the Reading Challenge on time.
-You write notes while reading thinking "I think this is perfect to put in my Goodreads review!"

message 188: by [deleted user] (new)

Now that's funny. I actually do a bunch of these, but didn't see this original link pop up and would have actually like to have contributed to this list. However, I'm cool with what's there right now.

message 189: by Library Nymph (last edited Sep 09, 2017 11:02AM) (new)

Library Nymph 2, 5, 6, 9=Me : )

"It's like the happiest cult I've been part of." LOL

I have Goodreads in my browser bar so all I have to do is click to get to the site.

message 190: by Kat valentine ( Katsbookcornerreads) (last edited Sep 09, 2017 11:19AM) (new)

Kat valentine ( Katsbookcornerreads) 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10!!!! Goodreads is one of my top5 fave sites!!! I love sharing and reading peoples reviews and books!!! Here's to many more wonderful years!!!

message 191: by Diane Brown (new)

Diane Brown I read a lot, but at least 85% of the books I read slide right out of my memory. Before Goodreads, I would find myself re-reading some book I'd completely forgotten about. I've even bought duplicates of books. Now that never happens because Goodreads keeps track of everything I've read. I'm obsessive about listing all the books I read -- even the ones I read to my kids. Thanks Goodreads!!

Lyndi (mibookobsession) Goodreads is my homepage, I don't even have to type G, lol. All of the above apply

message 193: by Mark (new)

Mark lol #5 is so me!

message 194: by Janice (new)

Janice I got "addicted"to Goodreads last year....good thing I Didn't know about it 10 years ago...I guess.I have read some rather "troll like" commets, and opinions...at times. Oh, well...we're human. I wish Goodreads 100 more...at least. Have a great day.

message 195: by Crime Addict (new)

Crime Addict Sifat 👍

message 196: by Sandy (new)

Sandy I believe someone wrote this based on my life

message 197: by Devon (new)

Devon 3 (I definitely recommend goodreads a lot), 5, 6, 8, 9, 10. These are definitely me. I love this site. It also gives me a great way to track whether I've pre-ordered a book or not. Also, at used book stores I can see easily pull up books I've been looking for.

message 198: by Hayley (new)

Hayley Jade Katherine wrote: "Or when you don't know what to read next and, instead of searching Amazon for ideas, you look on your "to read" list on Goodreads. You know it's quicker and the recommendations will be better. Also..."

This!!!
I'm another person who only has to type G in my browser for Goodreads!!

message 199: by Catherine (new)

Catherine I have to say number 1 is totally me!! And number 4 is a close second. Not all my friends are on goodredd....but i have recommeded many books!

message 200: by David (new)

David Number 9 is so me. I sometimes even write "pending reviews" just to get what I have to say out of my system.
