Ten Ways You Know You're a Goodreads Member

Posted by Hayley on September 5, 2017

Goodreads Turns Ten is sponsored by Audible. Enjoy a free book with your trial.

Your Want to Read shelf is out of control. You need to update your reading status. You'd rather be reading your book right now. (Sorry, we'll let you get back to that in a minute!)

You're here on Goodreads because, like us, you love books. And if your love of reading borders on obsession, don't worry—you're definitely not alone. We're all a little obsessed here.

For our Goodreads Ten-Year Anniversary Celebration, we asked you to complete this sentence: You know you're a Goodreads member when…

Your top answers are below. Check them out and then tell us what makes you a Goodreads member in the comments.

1. "Your husband looks at you funny when you give him four out of five stars after he's done mowing the lawn." -Elizabeth

2. "Your Want to Read pile is taller than Mount Everest." -Kate

3. "You obsessively hype up Goodreads to every single person you know. It's like the happiest cult I've been a part of. Anytime someone mentions anything to do with books, I say, 'You know what would help with that? Goodreads.'" -Carolyn

4. "You recommend all your books to your friends and then smile when you see the same book pop up on THEIR to-read lists!" -Allison

5. "You can't start a book without immediately going to the app or website to change the book from 'to read' to 'currently reading.'" -Kristin

6. "You type 'goo' into your browser, and Goodreads comes up before Google." -Alex

7. "Your friends check your Goodreads profile for gift-giving purposes." -Angie

8."You update your reading status before going to bed every night." -Lana

9. "You mentally rate the book while you are reading it, constantly changing the rating based on how impressed you are with the book. 'Three stars. Wow! Four stars at least… Now this brings it down to two… Not bad, four stars again… That was a solid five stars!'" -Vlada

10. "You check your Reading Challenge like it's the stock market." -Tessa

Leanne Crabtree I'm definitely 5, 6 and 10, with 8 some of the time :D

Heather Lita wrote: "2&3, 5&6, 8-10, and I think we need to add one.

You know you're a Goodreads member when…

When it's your Goodreads updates you check first, THEN Facebook."

I totally agree, Lita!! I barely get on Facebook now.

message 203: by Katherine (new)

Katherine B. Yup! That's me!

message 204: by Nicoleta (new)

Nicoleta 2, 3, 5, 6 and 10 are the reasons why. I still don't know what made me use Goodreads but it certainly proved to be the best thing in my life.

message 205: by Becka (new)

Becka Grieco Almost all of those are true lol

message 206: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Fitzgerald Numbers 2 and 5 are SO me it's scary; I think someone has been peeking in my keyhole! Anyway, here's another way to detect a Goodreads addict: You have library cards from several different libraries, because you can click on "libraries", put in your Zip Code, and you can find libraries that have one of your "Want to Read" books within a radius of your home (I try to keep it within 20 miles or less!)

message 207: by Deborah (new)

Deborah Obida So true 9/10.

message 208: by Jemmima (new)

Jemmima Schembri I love 1,2,9 and 10!

message 209: by Jemmima (new)

Jemmima Schembri You know you're a Goodreads member when you are spending more time on Goodreads than Instagram or talking to your friends on iMessage.

message 210: by Alexandra (new)

Alexandra Freire 5, 6 8!

message 211: by Do Your Reading (new)

Do Your Reading Your favorite shelf on your profile page features a different shelf that you change periodically. Also, the number of shelves you have are too many to count. 😁

message 212: by Colleen (new)

Colleen Love this - thanks for acknowledging all your GR members! Happy 10 years and to the next. Can't wait to see how the site evolves!

message 213: by Anne (new)

Anne Lessee, I got 2, 5, 7, 8, 9, and 10. I wish I could do 3 and 4, but my friends just don't seem to be interested. I don't understand them??

message 214: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Anderson I am in the process of trying to order all the books this one author I discovered on Goodreads ever wrote. One of the books is not available! And how was I not aware of this author for so many years before I joined goodreads?!

message 215: by Glenda (new)

Glenda Nelms 2,5,8, and 10 are me! Goodreads is paradise for book lovers!

message 216: by Hazel Bee (new)

Hazel Bee I do 3,5,& 9

message 217: by Zachary (new)

Zachary Number 6 is so freaking relatable

message 218: by Rut (new)

Rut #5,6, 9 and 10 are me!! When I do any of those I just know that I am happy to be a Goodreads member!

message 219: by Jeffery (new)

Jeffery Lee Radatz I look at the top ten list and I can associate with numbers 2,4, 5, 8, and 10. I love Goodreads and I have read new authors through this site!

message 220: by Samantha (new)

Samantha You know you're a Goodreads member if you excitedly rush to write a book review after finishing each book.

message 221: by Carolina (new)

Carolina Téllez 2, 3, 5 and 6!

message 222: by Richard (new)

Richard #8, 9, 10 are so me.

Bridget's Quiet Corner 3, 6, 9, & 10! Lol
But to add to that, a couple of my FB friends (since deleted one), will ask me for recommendations on books. One will tag me when he got book shopping happy! Lol I send them here or to booktube to get further recommendations based on the books they've already read. (Forgive any possible typos, I'm on my kindle and sometimes, GR and kindle dont get along when it comes to auto correct)

message 224: by Nell (new)

Nell Hamilton I'm quite unfaithful at updating my profile. Too busy reading.

message 225: by Dorthe (new)

Dorthe # 3, 5, 10 - getting there on 2.

Also, "... when you CANNOT POSSIBLY start reading some obscure book that is not on GR before adding it manually."

message 226: by Maede (new)

Maede So accurate!

message 231: by Cecilia (new)

Cecilia L.O.L SO TRUE!

message 232: by Shahrzad (new)

Shahrzad Pakgohar When you see a new book on the book-shelf of a book-store, first of all you check the book reviews in goodreads and you are happy that you have millions of friends whom can recommend books to you :)

message 233: by Jess (new)

Jess Lane 3, 5, and 10 are me in a nutshell. The moment someone says they read I say are you on Goodreads. If they aren't I make sure to go in to detail how awesome it is and even will go as far to help them set up an account. If a book is not immediately marked on Goodreads then I am not reading it. Thank goodness for the app. I check my reading challenge at least once a day if not more like it will change since the last time I checked and hadn't added a book. Then one that is missing is when I turn on my computer to pay bills or work the first thing I do is go to Goodreads. Not sure why I haven't just made it my home page lol Great list.

message 234: by Stevie (last edited Sep 10, 2017 06:04AM) (new)

Stevie Hugely guilty of 5, 10, and 9. When I am maybe a quarter of the way into a book and I'm loving it, the thoughts in the back of my head are about the review I'm going to write and I get so excited to share it with ANYONE!!

"You know you're a Goodreads member when ... you make an acquaintance and conversation makes it way to anything about books and your second comment is, (first is "So... you like reading?"), "are you on Goodreads?"

message 235: by Felicia (new)

Felicia 2,3,4,9,10 are all very common in my life. I never type Goodreads into my browser because I never close the tab. (Chrome saves all my open tabs and reopens them every time I restart the browser.)

I would add "Constantly checking email, than regular mail, to see if the fruits of obsessively entering Goodreads giveaways have arrived."

message 236: by Sarmad (new)

Sarmad for number 6, i only type 'g' and goodreads comes out before google

message 237: by Jasmine (new)

Jasmine Ahahahaha, number six is literally me!!!!!!!! I'm amazed when I type "goo" on the search engine and Google isn't the first related key word coming up. :DD

message 238: by Alyssa (new)

Alyssa Number 9 is too real 😂😂

message 239: by Kathy (new)

Kathy The book challenge is my favorite. I always check to see if I'm ahead or behind of the game. May not make the 100 book challenge I've set for myself. However, I'm going to come close.

message 240: by Christy (new)

Christy Roberts 2, 3, 5, 9 and 10 are me. For number 6 I already have goodreads bookmarked on my browser so don't have to wait for a search. Love this website and found a lot of good books to read not to mention new friends.

message 241: by Carol (new)

Carol Stankey I LOVE Goodreads ! I found it through a Facebook Group and came to realize that I am an Introvert Book Nerd and that is OK ! I have found SO many good books and authors through my Friends on Goodreads. I love everything about it !!! Cheers to 10 years !!

message 242: by Iana (new)

Iana 2, 5, 6, 8, 9, and 10 are me to a T. I am always on Goodreads even before I do my homework or anything that society deems important.

message 243: by Laurie (new)

Laurie Six and nine are me. I haven't been on long enought for the other to take in effect yet.

message 244: by Lea (new)

Lea Lopez You know you're a Goodreads member when...
1) you check reviews in Goodreads before starting/buying any book

2) while most people write new year's resolution every january 1, you update your reading challenge!

Happy 10 years, Goodreads!

message 245: by D.E. (new)

D.E. Jackson 2 & 3 are definitely me! :)

message 246: by EMILY (new)

EMILY I do exactly the same as number 9 but for me being a Goodreads member means knowing that there are other addicted people as I am who definitely know who Colleen Hoover is for instance. Not like my family... ;)

message 247: by Rlygirl (last edited Sep 10, 2017 12:24PM) (new)

Rlygirl Love these reasons! Sounds like me too, especially the one about promoting Goodreads to my friends, even if they look at me funny. I'm checking Goodreads more often than Facebook!

message 248: by Ninosy (new)

Ninosy (Wonder Woman) I can relate...
Lovely article...

message 249: by Keesa (new)

Keesa You have Kindle open in one browser tab and Goodreads open in another and switch back and forth between the two like a demented ping-pong ball.

message 250: by Brenda (new)

Brenda definitely 2, 5 & 6 for me. I love being a member of goodreads. I was really excited when I stumbled upon the giveaways section. After entering for the first time, my husband says, "Good luck with that".... well my membership is coming up to 8 years and I've won 30 pre-release books. So take that hubby.
