Porque o Tejo e a vós darão passagem,

Today is the Portuguese Author's Day and, therefore, also my day! Happy day to all Portuguese authors and a special thank you to the great children's literature author, Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen, who sparked my love for literature at a young age and thus contributed to my journey as an author.

We also celebrate today, on the occasion of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's birthday, Sherlock Holmes Day.
In my early teens, I was obsessed with reading detective stories. The stories I read influenced my writing, which can be evidenced in my book "May Ann", which will be launched on 13 June at the Lisbon Book Fair, as, although it is a romance... it has a touch of mystery. ;)

Shall we talk about Arthur Conan Doyle? He was born on this day, in 1859 in Scotland, and was an famous writer, known worldwide for his stories about the detective Sherlock Holmes. He studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh Medical School and, later, while waiting for patients in his medical practice in London, he used the time to write.

The first appearance of his famous character Sherlock Holmes was in the story 'A Study in Scarlet' in 1887. Holmes is a detective famous for using the scientific method and deductive reasoning in solving seemingly insoluble crimes. The character became so well-known that many believed he was a real person. The fictional address of Sherlock Holmes in London, 221B Baker Street, which did not exist at the time Doyle wrote the stories, is today the site of the character's eponymous museum.

Margarida Lacerda EN: May 8th and 9th - Time of Remembrance and Reconciliation for Those Who Lost Their Lives During the Second World War II

Today, on the day we remember those who lost their lives during World War II, I write about Anne Frank.

For quite a few years now, I have been "writing to her," as she wrote to Kitty. Anne is very special to me. Last month, I had the privilege of going to Amsterdam and visiting the Anne Frank House, the building where she, her family, and other Jews hid during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands. It was emotional to walk on that ground and be where they were; the anxiety, frustration, and fear that they must have felt at that time…

Annelies Marie Frank was born in Frankfurt, Germany, in 1929. In 1933, when the Nazi Party came to power and Adolf Hitler was appointed Chancellor of Germany, anti-Semitic manifestations began to increase in the country. This situation led the Frank family to move to Amsterdam. Otto Frank, Anne's father, was assigned to work as a manager at the Dutch branch of Opekta, a company that produced pectin (an ingredient used in jam making) and spices.

In 1940, Nazi Germany invaded the Netherlands and began persecuting Jews, implementing discriminatory laws. Among other humiliating measures, Jews were required to wear a yellow Star of David sewn onto their clothing.

Two years later, Anne's sister, Margot, was summoned to present herself at a ‘labour camp’ in Germany. This situation led to the anticipation of the plan Otto and other trusted individuals had projected: hide in the Secret Annex located in the Opekta premises on Prinsengracht. It was the rear part of the building, with the only access being hidden behind a bookcase in the company's office. They planted multiple false clues indicating that the Frank family had gone to Switzerland, and in the early hours of 06 of July of 1942, the family, dressed in many layers of clothing to avoid being seen with suitcases, went to the Secret Annex.

During their stay, Miep Gies, Victor Kugler, Johannes Kleiman, and Bep Voskuijl, the only employees of the company who knew about the Hiding, assisted the family with food and other necessities. Jan Gies and Johannes Hendrik Voskuijl, who did not work for the company but were part of Frank's circle of trust, provided information about the progress of the war. Later, the van Pels family and dentist Pfeffer also sought refuge in the Secret Annex. The space for eight people was tight; they couldn't make noise during the day so that the workers of the company wouldn't hear them, and everything had to be kept dark. Fear was a constant…

On August 04, 1944, after an anonymous report, the Gestapo (Nazi Secret State Police) discovered the Hiding and arrested the Frank family, the van Pels, and Fritz Pfeffer, who were deported to different concentration camps. Anne and Margot were sent to the Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camp in Germany and eventually died, victims of the typhus epidemic in February or March 1945 - a few weeks before the prisoners were liberated by the British troops. Anne was only 15 years old.

In May of the same year, Nazi Germany was defeated by the Allied forces. When Otto Frank was liberated from Auschwitz Concentration Camp, he searched for his family and sadly learned that he was the only survivor among the eight people who had hidden in the Secret Annex.

Anne had received a diary for her 13th birthday. In it, she recorded her experiences from June 12, 1942, to August 1, 1944. Initially, Anne wrote in her diary her deepest thoughts and did not want anyone to read it. But later, driven by the possibility that what she wrote could serve as written evidence of Nazi oppression, she began to edit her writing.

After the Gestapo invaded the Secret Annex, Miep and Bep found the diary on the floor with some loose sheets; they kept it and handed it to Otto after the war. When he received the diary, he described the reading process as "painful" and was surprised by the quality of his daughter's writing, as well as the accuracy of the events described. He realized that Anne had a depth of thought and kept her feelings to herself.

Anne always dreamed of being a writer, and her father fulfilled her dream by publishing her diary in 1947. When Otto published the first version of the diary, he used the original private sheets along with those edited by the young girl.

However, there are some disputes regarding the authenticity of the diary, accusing it of being a fraud, written by Otto. Nevertheless, the pages were analyzed by the Dutch Institute for War Documentation, comparing the handwriting with known sheets and letters written by Anne Frank, and finally declaring the book as genuine.

In the 1990s, complete versions of The Diary of Anne Frank were published for the first time, where removed and/or censored parts by Otto Frank could be read. These parts talk about the young girl's growth, adolescence, changes in her body, sexuality, menstruation, but also criticisms of her parents's marriage and especially of her mother, Edith, with whom Anne had a difficult relationship.

Even if Anne Frank's Diary is not authentic, the important thing to remember is the message written in it. Anne is the representation of all Jews, adults, elderly, young or children who suffered from Nazi persecution. It is a reminder of the pain and fear that the Jews endured, a symbol of the struggle against prejudice and hope that history will not repeat itself.

Margarida Lacerda EN: 23rd April - World Book and Copyright Day & William Shakespeare’s Anniversary 📚

Today we celebrate two very important literary events! We celebrate our beloved books by highlighting their significance, as well as the importance of copyrighting.

The earliest known records of text were made on clay tablets, animal skin, or papyrus. Parchment was replaced by paper and is the most used format today (excluding, of course, digital books!)

In the literary field, copyright grants writers exclusive control over their works. That is, they are properly recognized and rewarded for their creations and able to decide how their books are used and distributed, protecting themselves against unauthorized use or improper exploitation by third parties.

We also commemorate the birthday of William Shakespeare. Internationally known for his play ‘Romeo and Juliet’, he was born on 23rd of April of 1564 in England. Shakespeare is considered by many the greatest playwright and poet of the English language and one of the most important writers of all time.

"BASTA PUM BASTA!
UMA GERAÇÃO, QUE CONSENTE DEIXAR-SE REPRESENTAR
POR UM DANTAS É UMA GERAÇÃO QUE NUNCA O FOI!
É UM COIO D'INDIGENTES, D'INDIGNOS E DE CEGOS!

E SÓ PODE PARIR ABAIXO DE ZERO!
ABAIXO A GERAÇÃO! MORRA O DANTAS, MORRA! PIM!"

Almada Negreiros was a renowned and versatile artist of XX Century Portuguese Modernism (cultural, artistic, and literary movement). Being self-taught, as he did not attend any art school, he gained notoriety from a young age. His works include a diverse range, from drawing and painting to poetry and dramaturgy.

In 1915, he was part of the ‘Orpheu Generation’ alongside with names like Fernando Pessoa and Mário de Sá-Carneiro, with the publication of the magazine ‘Orpheu’. Influenced by European modernist movements (futurism, expressionism, cubism, etc.), this magazine sparked controversy and scandals due to its polemic subjects and innovative style. One of the biggest opponents was the physician, diplomat, and writer Júlio Dantas, whose critique about the avant-gardists was intense.

Negreiros reacted publicly and, in his famous text, ‘Manifesto Anti-Dantas e Por Extenso’, he wrote:

"ENOUGH BANG ENOUGH!
A GENERATION THAT CONSENTS TO BE REPRESENTED
BY A DANTAS IS A GENERATION THAT NEVER WAS!
IT'S A BUNCH OF INDIGENTS, UNWORTHY, AND BLIND!
IT'S A PACK OF CHARLATANS AND SELLOUTS,
AND CAN ONLY GIVE BIRTH BELOW ZERO!
DOWN WITH THE GENERATION! DOWN WITH DANTAS, DOWN! BOOM!"
[...]
"DANTAS WAS BORN TO PROVE THAT
NOT EVERYONE WHO WRITES KNOWS HOW TO WRITE!

Feliz dia a todas as mulheres! 💐

Margarida Lacerda EN: 08 March | WOMEN’S DAY 🌼

I present a composition of various female authors, both classical and contemporary.

An achievement celebrated today is the presence of women in literature. Throughout history, just like in other fields, women have faced difficulties in publishing their books.

In addition to having limited access to education, there was the prejudice that women should only be managing household duties. They should not be involved in intellectual activities; politics, business, and other professional areas were predominantly executed by men, and, after marriage, the women's possessions went directly to their husbands, excluding women from leadership positions, influence, and independence. If women challenged these limiting expectations, they faced severe criticism not only from society but also from family and friends.

Publishing a book written by a woman was very challenging; however, if achieved, the work would have creative restrictions as it was expected to address ‘appropriate subjects for women’, such as romantic novels. Nevertheless, the published books were often undervalued compared to those written by men, and sales were very low. To counter this sad situation, female authors resorted to using male pseudonyms and anonymity, not receiving the merit and praise they deserved as the true writers.

Despite these adversities, many authors challenged these prejudices and social norms, paving the way for future generations and contributing significantly to literature. Fortunately, today there is awareness of the importance of diversity and inclusion in the literary world.
To all the resilient female writers, my heartfelt thanks! Thank you for providing me with the opportunity to write and publish under my own name, without any fear of prejudice for being a woman. Let's continue this fight because every woman has a voice to be heard and read.

I wish all women a happy day! 💐

The iconic phrase of the philosopher Descartes, «𝑰 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒌, 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒆 𝑰 𝒂𝒎» highlights the importance of thought as proof of individual existence.
René Descartesintroduced methodical doubt as a tool to find unquestionable certainties, that is, to question everything that can be questioned, including doubting sensory perceptions, with the aim of reaching fundamental and unquestionable truths.
The simple fact that someone doubts something implies the existence of an individual. Therefore, the conclusion is that we can doubt many things, but we cannot doubt the existence of the subject who creates the doubt.

Margarida Lacerda EN: 28 January 1813 - ‘Pride and Prejudice' book by Jane Austen was Published 📖

As you may know by now, the classic writer, Jane Austen, was a big inspiration for my book “May Ann”, which will be published this year.

Today we celebrate the anniversary of the publication of her well-known book: ‘Pride and Prejudice’.
Although the author finished it in 1797, it was only published in 1813, as it was rejected before. The initial title was ‘First Impressions’.

The story revolves around Elizabeth Bennet, also known as Lizzy, second child of a family of five daughters, that overcomes social and romantic challenges in an era where the social conventions often collide with true feelings. The entire book is a critique of the social, emotional and traditional aspects of century XIX England.

For those who liked the book, I recommend the BBC’s mini series as well as the movie starring Keira Knightley. The famous movie ‘Bridget Jones’s Diary’ was inspired by the book of Helen Fielding, which in turn was inspired by ‘Pride and Prejudice’ by Jane Austen.

A. A. Milne is an english author that and became famous for his poems and books featuring Winnie-the-Pooh.

In 1926, the first book about the adventures of the little bear, titled ‘Winnie-the-Pooh’, was published.

The author incorporated various aspects of his own life into the Winnie-the-Pooh stories. The bear himself was inspired by a stuffed bear owned by his son, as well as many other characters that were actually the child’s toys. Christopher Robin, the boy in the story, is the name of Milne's son.

Currently, the rights of the stories belong to Disney. In 1997, the animated film ‘The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh’ was released, compiling three animated shorts that Walt Disney produced, inspired by A. A. Milne's books, with additional content to blend the three perfectly together.

Margarida Lacerda 04 Janeiro – Dia Mundial do Braille

The word Braille is named after its creator, Louis Braille, who lost his vision in a childhood accident. At the age of 15, he developed a code for the French alphabet based on ‘Écriture Nocturne’ (night writing), a military code created at the request of Napoléon Bonaparte so that his soldiers could communicate silently among themselves, without any light source.

EN: A few months ago, I was invited to take part in the Chiado Books’s Portuguese Contemporary Poetry Anthology ‘Entre o Sono e Sonho’ (in portuguese, Between Sleep and Dream). Two distinct concepts, yet intertwined: Sleep, the reality; and Dream, the liberty.

In a seven-stanza poem, I dedicated the words I wrote to my father, Alfredo Lacerda, portraying his reality with my creativity, and offering him, this Christmas, a special page from this book.

I speak of his origins, his growth, his evolution, where he has been to, what he has been though, of himself, what he built, what he overcame, what is gone and never to return, what has mutated and is no more. Lavoisier used to say, «in Nature, nothing is created, nothing is lost, everything is transformed», and that is also our human essence.

Jane Austen was born on 16th December 1775 in Hampshire, England. From an early age she exhibited a writing talent, creating juvenilia of romances, parodies and tales that she would read aloud to her family.

In her early twenties, she began to write the initial versions of her well-known novels ‘Sense and Sensibility’, ‘Pride and Prejudice’ and ‘Northanger Abbey’ (originally titled ‘Elinor and Marianne’, ‘First Impressions’ and ‘Susan’, respectively).
In 1797, her father tried to publish ‘Pride and Prejudice’, but the editor rejected the work.

Later, Jane reviewed her novel ‘Sense and Sensibility’ and, bearing the costs of publication, it was accepted by an editor and published in 1811 under the pseudonym ‘By a Lady’. As I mentioned before in a post, ‘Sense and Sensibility’ was the first book published by the author.
Following the success of this book, Jane Austen released in 1813 her most famous work: ‘Pride and Prejudice’.

Her health began to deteriorate in 1815, and she passed away in 1817, at the age of 41. According to the biography of Jane Austen written by her brother, her final words were: «I want nothing, but death».

Fun Fact: There is no official portrait of the author. The most known portrait of Jane Austen is a painting commissioned by Jane’s nephew many years after her death, based on an unfinished watercolour made by the writer’s sister circa 1810.

Florbela Espanca
