October 8th -- Thursday -- Sorry, no photos -- I can't figure it out, all my iPads aren't doing anything except looking cute in their red covers. I can't even seem to email so I guess I'll call the iPad doc.
You guys are amazing -- "real" readers. Do you want a sorry statistic? Are you ready for this? Only 2 percent of Americans read which means you're in a very special club. That is so hard to believe -- does anyone know the stats on other countries? Is it the same everywhere since there are so many entertainment options?
Do you think fewer children are growing up enjoying reading? Or not? Do you read regularly to your kids? Grandkids?

Annie When my husband and I first got married, we were glued to the TV, but since we both had early morning jobs, it started to really wear us down and make us too groggy to function at work like we should. So we made a big change. For nearly 14 years now, we have not had a TV in our house. We have never regretted our decision. We read to our kids every every evening, and in the meantime, between schoolwork and chores, my kids always have their noses in books. As for me, I started reading at four and the rest, as they say, is history. It's amazing that only 2% of Americans read. That is truly astounding! I've always viewed the book industry as huge; how is that possible if only 2% read? I view reading as one of the most important parts of education - and I don't mean textbooks. Books can take kids to countries they'll never visit (most likely), they can take kids on a more personal trip through history than they'll ever get in a classroom... The world opens up when we open the pages of a book. I think if more kids read, we would have much less drop-outs in schools, less violence, more drive to DO something other than watching TV or playing games on various devises... Technology is truly wonderful, but I believe it has, in many ways, crippled our children. One example of that would be the lack of imagination today's kids have. Think about it - if you took away every TV, computer, gaming systems, iPad, etc., what would children do? They'd be bored stiff! Why? Because they have not been given the chance to develop a good imagination to figure out constructive ways of playing without the aid of technology! Now, don't get me wrong, I love technology, but I do believe it needs to be tempered. Books are a tremendous tool in education and should be a large part of every child's life.
