A few thoughts on BURNED (SPOILERS abound)

First, I want to say thank you to all who’ve written to tell me how much you loved BURNED. I love hearing from you guys, getting to meet you at events and am eternally grateful for your support. It means the world to me that you love the characters and come along for the ride with me every time!

But...I’ve also heard from readers that think BURNED isn’t the book I wanted to write. While I hate taking time away from wrapping up FEVERBORN, this mistruth needs to be tended to and disposed of.

BURNED IS the book I wanted to write. To those who felt so much disappointment with where the story went in this installment that they feel the only possible explanation is that I didn’t want to write BURNED the way I did, or I wasn’t in love with the story and following my muse—that’s not true. You didn’t like it. And that’s okay. But it’s not because I don’t love the book. I do.

I didn’t succumb to pressure from anyone, fans or publishing folks, to change my story after ICED. If I made any mistake at all it was in proposing the next three books while I was getting divorced and not taking the time to write a full outline. I pitched one book and stated “plus two more”. Because I’ve been with my publisher for as long and successfully as I have, they accepted it that way. Then, as I began writing ICED, I realized I had some problems to sort out, like: who the hell is going to narrate when Dani becomes Jada? There was also the larger problem that Mac and Barrons’s story had to unfold alongside Dani’s. I couldn’t keep them offstage that long. My mistake: I didn’t see it going in. A bigger mistake would have been to stick to a bad plan just because I made it.

A few say there’s talk that ICED wasn’t well received so I was pressured by my publisher to change the story to ‘appease’ fans. Neither of those assertions is true. ICED was well received by an enormous number of readers, in fact it’s the best reviewed book of my career, and over the past two years has sold very well. My publisher and I are extremely happy with it. If I’d wanted to appease fans with a book, I know how. I did things in BURNED that I knew would upset readers. The goal isn’t to make readers mad, there’s a purpose and that’s simply where the characters and story are right now.

If you think it was hard reading Mac feeling lost and uncertain of herself now that she’s no longer the MVP and has something brewing inside her that terrifies her—it was even harder writing it. It was similar to slogging through her eternal grief at the beginning of SHADOWFEVER. I began to wonder if it would ever end. Yet in the overall story arc, her grief, like her loss of direction right now, had and have purpose. You may not like or even see that purpose, you may feel strongly that I should have written it a different way. You may feel strongly that I should stop writing Mac. Or stop writing Dani. Neither is going to happen.

I follow my muse and my muse put Mac where she is at this time for reasons. I understand that those reasons are not apparent to others because only I know where the story is going. And I can see how that’s hard for the reader.

To those who were upset with what happened to Dani, it WAS foreshadowed in ICED. Dani was always going to go through those silvers and come back older. And as someone else. Jada was there in my head all through ICED, talking in the background, fighting to come out. I adore Dani. It kills me to see her contained in any way. But Jada is only a prelude to the real Mega. I always intended to give Dani to the reader (and hopefully make you adore her)—then take her away in this brutal fashion. The only concession I made in BURNED (and I said this last year) was making Jada 19 instead of 17. Was that because people complained? No. 17? 19? Not that much difference. In terms of freedom with her sexuality, a subtle nuance. It made writing her more interesting to explore and I need to be utterly riveted by what I’m writing.

Was there controversy over Dani’s age in ICED? Sure. There was controversy over Mac in DARKFEVER. There was controversy over the rape in FAEFEVER. There was controversy over the end of DREAMFEVER. There’s constant controversy because my books end in cliffhangers. If I were interested in stopping controversy, I’d stop writing cliffhangers. Hell, I’d go back to writing my stand-alone romance novels

My publisher has never tried to control my writing in any way. They make soft suggestions and if I tell them no because I have a plan, they trust me. I’ve been with Random House for fifteen years, and my current editor for the entire Fever Series, and have never had better champions.

If anyone thinks that writing the Fever books has been easy, I can tell you it’s been a battle every step of the way. First with the readers who wanted me to continue writing stand alone romance, then with my publisher when DARKFEVER sold badly for the first year or two. Then with my publisher when BLOODFEVER sold badly. They, too, suggested I go back to writing what we knew sold: stand alone romance novels with happy endings and no cliffhangers, new couple each time. I just kept saying: wait. I know what I’m doing. And they waited. And they—and you—trusted me. I finished the series and you guys took SHADOWFEVER straight to number 1 on most lists in the country. I’m incredibly proud of those five books.

I’m also incredibly proud of ICED and BURNED. I’m not saying that because I ‘have to put a good face on things.’ I don’t have to do anything I don’t want to do. That’s a rule I live by. I can’t wait to finish FEVERBORN and FEVERSONG, bringing the second story arc that was always coming, to the resting place I need it to achieve.

Voltaire says writing requires a certain complete self-renunciation and self immersion. It does. I do it for me. By myself. To satisfy my muse, my artistic drives and desires. I offer it to the reader and when I’m lucky and all the stars line up—they love it. And when I’m not, they don’t. But reader response will never change the story I’m writing for this reason: I’m not writing my stories to be rich and famous. That was never my goal. I’ve been blessed enough in a challenging field to be fairly successful. But that’s icing on the cake. The cake is the writing. I write because I have these damns stories in my head—and half the time I don’t even understand why I’m so obsessed by them. I write to get them out. And I love it when the readers get it, when they see the intricacies of the web I weave, when they fall in love with the characters I love so much myself.

But when readers don’t like one of my books—accusing me of not having written the book I wanted to write because they didn’t get the book they wanted to read is not only absurd—but not true.

At the end of every writing day, I answer to one person: the bitch muse that drives me bugfuck. She is the only one who must be obeyed.

But back to the happy stuff: thank YOU for reading my books, for feeling passionately about them, for loving to hate and hating to love the people I can’t stop thinking and writing about. At the end of the day, I feel I have the best job in the world and can’t wait to see what tomorrow’s writing brings. That’s the feeling I live for, and you guys make it possible!

Xo

message 101: by Sheena (last edited Feb 16, 2015 07:18PM) (new)

Sheena Burned was a misstep for many readers. KMM is the author and can and should feel free to write what she sees, and some will like it...others well...shrug.

Burned disappointed me big time. Mac and Barons were a bore with their bland issues. This foolishness with "Jada" is a diversion that I don't even care to watch it unfold. Highlights were all things Lor. The rest could have been scrapped. Hopefully Feverborn is better. The good thing it's KMM it's a freak talent and I am sure to read Feverborn.

Melissa Ruelas I am a hardcore KMM fan! I wait each year for your next Fever book to come out with GREAT anticipation! When the books come out its like Fiesta Time here in San Antonio TX all over again! I will be utterly sad when the final book comes out knowing that is the last one! Thank you for this magical experience that is forever carved in my brain! Biggest and loyal fan

message 103: by Carrie (new)

Carrie Larsen Nicely said Karen - Your books and way of writing are phenomenal. You can't please everyone -- as the saying goes. Can't wait for the rest. You are amazing!

message 104: by Vruti (new)

Vruti Sivakumaran This is a great post! I really loved Burned and am looking forward to seeing more of Mac & Dani as they are right now. I'm not a huge fan of first-person narratives because there are very few authors who can really pull it off and that's why I really love your books. Mac is an amazing character because we really get to see her growth from a 'normal' girl to a fighter. I can see a lot of myself in Pink Mac sometimes and I can only hope that I can prove to be as resilient as she is. Dani's POV I couldn't take to as much, but that's okay. She is still an amazing character and provides a different perspective to the Fever Universe.

Can't wait for FeverBorn!!!

message 105: by Rhonda (new)

Rhonda I have read all of your books. In fact I reread them all prior to the next release and I love them all. You are amazing and I was sure when I read it that this was exactly what you wanted to write. It kind of repositions everyone and moves the story along in a way that sets up an amazing next book. I like Mac invisible. How else would we learn the stuff she sees? I can't wait to see how all these different situations are resolved! And we all know it will be WORTH THE WAIT!
But not too long this time. Please

message 108: by Melanie (new)

Melanie Cesa I absolutely LOVE this series! It's one of my faves and I look forward to every book! I love that you write for yourself, that's the way it should be. Your writing is fantastic and so intricate. Keep them coming and I'll keep reading!

message 109: by Leila (new)

Leila I love all you're books!!! I'm really glad that you wrote about Mac again!!!! That's really great!!!! THANK YOU!!!!

message 110: by Giana (new)

Giana Darling I have to say I love that you addressed the fans concerns in such a well-thought out and eloquent way. I think that the entire series is beautifully written and complex and I think readers should trust in your abilities after so many books to bring the series to its rightful conclusion. Sometimes it can be hard as a reader to see a much loved series take a turn you didn't anticipate but it's always important to remember that it is the authors vision that we are taking part in and not the other way around. I love your books and I love that you were brave enough to face criticism like this.

message 111: by Jocelyn (new)

Jocelyn F Thank you for every single word you have written!!! I have re-read all of the Highlander series and the Fever Series. Your muse is awesome and I can't wait for the next book! I have to finish my Finance class before picking up Burned because I know that once it's started I will read straight through like all of the others! 2 more weeks then booyah!! Please keep them coming and boo to the haters!!

message 112: by Nicole (new)

Nicole KMM is AWESOME!!! I will FOREVER buy and read EVERY book she EVER writes!!!! *wishing there were more highlanders though! :)* When days are tough I turn to books, and guess who's books are read over and over again!!!
KMM Rocks!!!

message 113: by Avidreader008 (new)

Avidreader008 I have read the Fever series and am about to start the Highlander books. I really want to know what happens when Dani and Mac finally confront each other. I haven't yet read Burned but can't wait for it. Mac is my new Hermione!

message 114: by Da Eu Phor Ic (new)

Da Eu Phor Ic Kristine I loved and enjoyed the fever series.
I salute your
hardwork and fascinating imagination.

I think 'Iced'
and 'Burned' books were great.

The fever novel is very
captivating. It's one of the daring and addictive
novels

I never got tired and fed up with the story.
I loved how the story and characters
evolved.

message 115: by Debbie (new)

Debbie Jones I have to say that I love your attitude about things!! These are your creations and not everyone is going to like them, but from what I can see almost everyone else loves them, so screw the Negative ones!! I started reading your books late, but once I started I couldn't put them down and I finished them in no time! Now I am reading your Highlander books and have to say I love them too, even though I am doing this backward! LOL I can't wait for the next Fever series books so I can see where things go with Dani/Jada, Mack & Barrons, and what the hell is happening with Daegus, because it will kill Chloe if they keep him from her!! I have a feeling I know what it is and why he is still alive, but I'm not going to give anything away, unless you, Karen, want it out there!!! So keep writing like you do, because so many of us love your writing! Go Girl and don't let them drive you bugfuckers!! LOL

message 116: by Hannah (new)

Hannah I'm not gonna lie - I was worried about the exact thing you described here. I grieved for the loss of Dani in this book, because your bitch muse DID make me love her! Glad to to know that it was indeed part of the plan all along, but that doesn't mean I won't continue to miss the child-Dani. Still, you know any book that makes me feel THAT emotional is something great. Can't wait for the next one!

(Also, I loved Lor in this one, he was frickin hilarious).

message 117: by Buttercup (new)

Buttercup Well, Burned disappointed me, doesn't make me a 'hater', just giving my honest opinion. That's what the reviews actually are for. Honest opinions on a book.

message 118: by Amy (new)

Amy Day I love all of your books! I am appalled that people would actually believe they can interrpret your thoughts and assume you would write something you didn't want too! Then tell you what YOU are thinking! Rudeness is everywhere! You are an amazing writer! Keep doing what you do! The definition of insanity is trying to please everyone except yourself! :)

Buttercup wrote: "Well, Burned disappointed me, doesn't make me a 'hater', just giving my honest opinion. That's what the reviews actually are for. Honest opinions on a book."

I loved Burned more than Iced. To each his own, obviously, but what I can't abide is people who dislike a book that I loved trying to convince me that I'm wrong for loving it, and that the author herself didn't want to write the book that she did, i.e., she was coerced by her publishers, editors, fans, etc. That makes me see red because I knew it was absolute bs. Karen, you're an amazing writer and your imagination in creating this story is boundless. I can't wait to read whatever follows.

Hey to each their own me personally I just didn't favor this one. I miss dani. But I trust KMM that she knows what she's doing, shes never let me down before :) can't wait for the next book. I'm glad she did confront the rumours though. It gives me some piece of mind that this was her decision in writing and not a publishers or someone else pushing her to write this way.

Yup. I miss Dani too. I can't wait to see how she and Jada are blended in a hopefully healthy way-- sure to be tons of angst along the way, but that makes the victory (if there is one) that much sweeter.

message 122: by Melani (new)

Melani Thomas I've read the Fever series several times. Thanks for this series! Always love your books. You keep writing and I'll keep reading! Big hug from Alabama.

message 123: by Kisha (new)

Kisha I finished Burned and immediately began reading it again. That happens to so, so few books, and only when I cannot bear to leave the world quite yet. After I started reading it, I read reviews here and saw one that said what you are talking about, and I thought... did she read the same book as I did??

It isn't comfortable to see Mac at such a low point, but at the same time, wasn't it great seeing her finally find out a whole bunch of stuff without struggling? Thanks for sharing. I can't wait to find out what happens next. :)

message 124: by Tracy (new)

Tracy I just finished Burned and liked it but I have to say I feel like the story just ended in a bad spot without the resolution of at least a couple things, like Kat, Who's the new guy, Christian's healing update, etc. I don't mind the actual cliffhanger, it just needed to be a little later...I am glad we are getting a more mature Dani/Jada and can't wait to see her when she get's herself straightened out...I wasn't entirely fond of Dani. I'm also as frustrated by the lack of sex between Mac and JZB as Mac is....what was that all about?

message 125: by Alicia (new)

Alicia I agree! I love and adore Mac and seeing her lost, vulnerable, at her lowest (invisible inside and out) while also trying to cross that last barrier between her and ol' JZB, I can't wait to hopefully see her surface stronger and more epic than ever--and FINALLY get some good loving between one of the best couples i've ever seen

message 131: by Judi (last edited Feb 26, 2015 02:46AM) (new)

Judi Haley Karen..I have been a reader for years (and years) but never been a fan of paranormal. That changed when I read your 1st book of the series..I could not put it down and within the week I have read the entire series.

The only disappointment I find, I don't have the next book. LOL You have made me a paranormal fan and the way you write is amazing..I find several authors that touch that special place inside you when you read their books.

The feedback I have on Dani is that I think everyone loved her "wisecracking" ways..She was so funny and Jada is the complete opposite. But everyone matures!

Thanks for introducing me to the paranormal world. Keep up your writing..I am a big, big fan!

message 135: by Ruth (last edited Mar 02, 2015 01:57AM) (new)

Ruth Karen please please am begging give us the full uninterrupted story of Dani and Ryodan!!!! I am in love with their story. I have read all of your books from the Highlanders to Burned and have loved them all! But nothing has affected me as much as Iced! Flat out loved it! Love the tension between Ryodan and Dani they even surpass Mac and Barrons and i thought that was impossible! Please give me some hope that Feverborn will be full of their story! Am literally dying here Karen! Love and admiration for you always!

That's exactly how I felt! Iced was your best book yet! The dynamic between Ry and Dani was out of this world entertaining. And Dani was has become my favourite character out of all of the fever series.

message 137: by rachel (new)

rachel I started with Iced at 14 loved it Dani is a Boss waited tell I was 16 for Burned and was disappointed loved Jada but me need my Dani fix she has a fairly accurate portal of being a teen

message 138: by Lynn (new)

Lynn LOVED IT. WAITING FOR IT TO COME OFF THE HOLD LIST SO I CAN TAKE MY TIME AND READ IT AGAIN!

message 139: by April (new)

April We love you and we love your writing. We trust you. Just keep the books coming!

message 140: by Denise (new)

Denise Williams I really can't believe there was comments that KMM didn't write the book she wanted due to pressure! When have her books ever turned out like we wanted or expected? I remember in the first fever books saying When are Mac and Barron's going to get togrther? PATIENCE has paid off. Love it! Love them all. Thanks

message 141: by G (new)

G The fact that she even addressed how many were displeased with the book is telling. Iced and Burned are polarizing in regards to reviews, most either loved or disliked them. After reading Burned I was going to drop the series...it was that mediocre. Once again, KMM has reeled me back in. After reading her thoughts I hope to get the book I "want to read" this next year.

message 142: by [deleted user] (new)

I love this series I could care less if other people don't and Im glad KMM just continues to write the stories she wants to write.

message 143: by Jessica (new)

Jessica Cavin Thanks Karen! While BURNED wasn't exactly what I saw coming, it was definitely not a disappointment. I am in love with this series and I cannot wait until you release the next two books. This story gets under my skin, in a good way, and I am so thankful that you have given it to us. :)

message 144: by Okpan (new)

Okpan Im crazy about your books Karen! If other people have issues with ICED and Burned ,then too bad. As for me,keep on writing more fever books! I would really love to know more about the nine's history.

message 145: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Marie There isn't a single book of the Fever Series that I haven't loved. Before reading Iced, I thought I wasn't going to like it, in fact, I had decided to not read it at all. But I was so wrong! It was a fantastic book and I loved everything about it. So from now on I'll trust your muse no matter where it leads your books.

I'll quote Dani here: "You're the shit"

message 146: by Kat (new)

Kat People who say they hate seeing Mac like this are too impatient. Believe me, I hate seeing her vulnerable and invisible (literally), but that only means amazing things are about to happen with her. Right now, it seems like she's being overshadowed by "true" badasses like Jada, but I can tell that Mac is about to shock the world with what she can do. I've never fallen so hard for a series like this. You truly are an amazing author. The amount of detail and unexpected turns that go into your plot is absolutely amazing. I can't wait for the next book!!!!

message 147: by Boba (new)

Boba Cant the book come earlier than january? Im dying in here

message 148: by David (new)

David I got hooked on this series when the first book was a Free Fridays giveaway on Barnes and Noble. I love how the characters have weaknesses and failings as well as strengths and how those failings make them better, just as in real life. I will admit that, as a 67-year-old retired man, some of the more explicit language made me wish I were 30 years younger (and a lot better looking), but what the hell, it's a fantasy and like any fantasy, there are things that are, yes, I'll say it, fantastic. I am glad to hear that more books are forthcoming. I can't wait to read them all. Keep up the great work Karen. Luv ya!

message 149: by April (new)

April Chavez Every KMM book has been a stepping stone leading us to where we are now and to where she is going. From her stand alone Highlander series that introduced the Keltar to the Fever series, each book is building us up, connecting and intertwining, they all serve a purpose, and we'll see it all come together, when KMM reaches her end game. I for one have loved each book, the stand alone's and Fever series, and that included Ice'd and Burned, and I'm looking forward to seeing where each character is headed..hopefully we wont' have to wait too long.

message 150: by Claire (new)

Claire THANK YOU so much for writing such terrific books ! I love them all in different kind of ways but I have to admit that for now they are the only books which make me feel like I was living in the world you've created... which make me feel SO bad when I finish one of them because I don't want it to end !
So I just wanted to say thank you for writing, believing in what you're doing (in what you're creating) and never giving up ~
