A few thoughts on BURNED (SPOILERS abound)

First, I want to say thank you to all who’ve written to tell me how much you loved BURNED. I love hearing from you guys, getting to meet you at events and am eternally grateful for your support. It means the world to me that you love the characters and come along for the ride with me every time!

But...I’ve also heard from readers that think BURNED isn’t the book I wanted to write. While I hate taking time away from wrapping up FEVERBORN, this mistruth needs to be tended to and disposed of.

BURNED IS the book I wanted to write. To those who felt so much disappointment with where the story went in this installment that they feel the only possible explanation is that I didn’t want to write BURNED the way I did, or I wasn’t in love with the story and following my muse—that’s not true. You didn’t like it. And that’s okay. But it’s not because I don’t love the book. I do.

I didn’t succumb to pressure from anyone, fans or publishing folks, to change my story after ICED. If I made any mistake at all it was in proposing the next three books while I was getting divorced and not taking the time to write a full outline. I pitched one book and stated “plus two more”. Because I’ve been with my publisher for as long and successfully as I have, they accepted it that way. Then, as I began writing ICED, I realized I had some problems to sort out, like: who the hell is going to narrate when Dani becomes Jada? There was also the larger problem that Mac and Barrons’s story had to unfold alongside Dani’s. I couldn’t keep them offstage that long. My mistake: I didn’t see it going in. A bigger mistake would have been to stick to a bad plan just because I made it.

A few say there’s talk that ICED wasn’t well received so I was pressured by my publisher to change the story to ‘appease’ fans. Neither of those assertions is true. ICED was well received by an enormous number of readers, in fact it’s the best reviewed book of my career, and over the past two years has sold very well. My publisher and I are extremely happy with it. If I’d wanted to appease fans with a book, I know how. I did things in BURNED that I knew would upset readers. The goal isn’t to make readers mad, there’s a purpose and that’s simply where the characters and story are right now.

If you think it was hard reading Mac feeling lost and uncertain of herself now that she’s no longer the MVP and has something brewing inside her that terrifies her—it was even harder writing it. It was similar to slogging through her eternal grief at the beginning of SHADOWFEVER. I began to wonder if it would ever end. Yet in the overall story arc, her grief, like her loss of direction right now, had and have purpose. You may not like or even see that purpose, you may feel strongly that I should have written it a different way. You may feel strongly that I should stop writing Mac. Or stop writing Dani. Neither is going to happen.

I follow my muse and my muse put Mac where she is at this time for reasons. I understand that those reasons are not apparent to others because only I know where the story is going. And I can see how that’s hard for the reader.

To those who were upset with what happened to Dani, it WAS foreshadowed in ICED. Dani was always going to go through those silvers and come back older. And as someone else. Jada was there in my head all through ICED, talking in the background, fighting to come out. I adore Dani. It kills me to see her contained in any way. But Jada is only a prelude to the real Mega. I always intended to give Dani to the reader (and hopefully make you adore her)—then take her away in this brutal fashion. The only concession I made in BURNED (and I said this last year) was making Jada 19 instead of 17. Was that because people complained? No. 17? 19? Not that much difference. In terms of freedom with her sexuality, a subtle nuance. It made writing her more interesting to explore and I need to be utterly riveted by what I’m writing.

Was there controversy over Dani’s age in ICED? Sure. There was controversy over Mac in DARKFEVER. There was controversy over the rape in FAEFEVER. There was controversy over the end of DREAMFEVER. There’s constant controversy because my books end in cliffhangers. If I were interested in stopping controversy, I’d stop writing cliffhangers. Hell, I’d go back to writing my stand-alone romance novels

My publisher has never tried to control my writing in any way. They make soft suggestions and if I tell them no because I have a plan, they trust me. I’ve been with Random House for fifteen years, and my current editor for the entire Fever Series, and have never had better champions.

If anyone thinks that writing the Fever books has been easy, I can tell you it’s been a battle every step of the way. First with the readers who wanted me to continue writing stand alone romance, then with my publisher when DARKFEVER sold badly for the first year or two. Then with my publisher when BLOODFEVER sold badly. They, too, suggested I go back to writing what we knew sold: stand alone romance novels with happy endings and no cliffhangers, new couple each time. I just kept saying: wait. I know what I’m doing. And they waited. And they—and you—trusted me. I finished the series and you guys took SHADOWFEVER straight to number 1 on most lists in the country. I’m incredibly proud of those five books.

I’m also incredibly proud of ICED and BURNED. I’m not saying that because I ‘have to put a good face on things.’ I don’t have to do anything I don’t want to do. That’s a rule I live by. I can’t wait to finish FEVERBORN and FEVERSONG, bringing the second story arc that was always coming, to the resting place I need it to achieve.

Voltaire says writing requires a certain complete self-renunciation and self immersion. It does. I do it for me. By myself. To satisfy my muse, my artistic drives and desires. I offer it to the reader and when I’m lucky and all the stars line up—they love it. And when I’m not, they don’t. But reader response will never change the story I’m writing for this reason: I’m not writing my stories to be rich and famous. That was never my goal. I’ve been blessed enough in a challenging field to be fairly successful. But that’s icing on the cake. The cake is the writing. I write because I have these damns stories in my head—and half the time I don’t even understand why I’m so obsessed by them. I write to get them out. And I love it when the readers get it, when they see the intricacies of the web I weave, when they fall in love with the characters I love so much myself.

But when readers don’t like one of my books—accusing me of not having written the book I wanted to write because they didn’t get the book they wanted to read is not only absurd—but not true.

At the end of every writing day, I answer to one person: the bitch muse that drives me bugfuck. She is the only one who must be obeyed.

But back to the happy stuff: thank YOU for reading my books, for feeling passionately about them, for loving to hate and hating to love the people I can’t stop thinking and writing about. At the end of the day, I feel I have the best job in the world and can’t wait to see what tomorrow’s writing brings. That’s the feeling I live for, and you guys make it possible!

Giseli I love your books! I can wait to see where will take it! I can imagine how you keep up with all the stories and character almost envy who will pick up the series completed later, it is hard to see it developing ... but It trust you :).

Reader75 These books are amazing!!!

Of course it's hard to see Mac so lost - being invisible is a great metaphor for her at this point. But, it's in these moments of loss and confusion that she always finds her strength. Can't wait to see the ride you take us on.

Keep going. I'm locked in tight, and ready to go!!

message 3: by Gergana (new)

Gergana I loved Iced and Burned and that's what matters! I don't care what anyone else has to say about it! :P

message 4: by iamGamz (new)

iamGamz Burned is amazing! I love Mac. She is fallible and that makes it easier for me to relate to her. I can not wait to see where you take the rest of the series. Dani/Jada - OMG! Poor Ryodan doesn't stand a chance. He is days of standing at the top of the stairs and nodding are sooooo over! He just doesn't know it yet! I have read the series two times already - including all the Highlander books, and I have every intention of reading the entire thing all over again. Thank you for this amazing escape into the the Highlands and Dublin without ever having to leave NYC. :D

message 5: by [deleted user] (new)

I have LOVED this series so far. This may not have been my most favorite book in the series so far (you will have to produce some serious magic to take Shadowfever from my top spot) but it left me wanting more, I always want more, and isn't that what a great book does? I can't wait for Feverborn and to see where you take me next!

message 6: by Hannah (new)

Hannah I loved Burned. Loved it so much I finished it in 5 hours, before noon the day it came out. I'll probably read it again soon, much like I've reread all of the Fever series, and honestly, every book you've written. And it's nice to know too that this is only the second act. I like knowing that if I put all of the books in your series together, we would only be in the first 15-25% still. So thank you

message 7: by Sarah (new)

Sarah i'm not gonna lie and say burned was my fave and that i loved it more than iced, but i always respected your choices as a writer and i hated fans thinking they had the right to speak for you when none of us knew YOUR truth. thank you for clearing it up and keep on keepin' on!

message 8: by chloe (last edited Feb 13, 2015 08:49PM) (new)

chloe Oh my gosh, I'm so glad you wrote this! I've always trusted your muse and you :) your books are utterly brilliant, I've never been so riveted and completely engrossed in a series' characters/setting/plot/everything! Seriously, it takes over my life whenever I decide to reread! (or just speculate with other Maniacs ;)
I always knew you knew what you were doing, you're so fecking brilliant.
Seriously, thank you for writing these books!! I have no idea where I'd be without them.
And thank you for taking the time to write this :) it just shows how much you care! You're the best, KMM. I'll always be a loyal fan no matter what anyone else says :)

message 9: by Shannon (last edited Feb 13, 2015 08:50PM) (new)

Shannon Thanks for addressing this. I'm really glad to see your side of things and it's good to know that you wrote the story you wanted to write. If you're reading this, please don't push back Feverborn! I can't wait any longer! :)

message 10: by Samantha (new)

Samantha I'm so interested in reading what happens next. Just don't stop writing! LOL Can't wait for October.

message 11: by Fresiako (new)

Fresiako I'm still holding out hope that Feverborn will focus more on Dani and Ryo. I just crave Dani's POV. This right here -> "But Jada is only a prelude to the real Mega." gives me hope that we'll have Dani our bae back soon. :'(

message 12: by Blendy (new)

Blendy DAMN....my respect for you, already at an all time high, just shot through God's ass. I'll be the first to admit that I didn't and wouldn't read a book based solely on Dani, because I was enraptured with Mac and Barrons and Dani was of low interest to me. When I saw that BURNED brought us back to Mac and Barrons, I never once felt as though you did it for the readers, but that you had more of their story that needed to be told. I would have been happy if the next few books centered around Dani, as it is your prerogative to do so as you please, but my heart soared when I realized that was not to be the case. I support and love every decision you make, even if it's one I don't like. Thank you for this post, it just truly solidifies you as one of my all time favorite authors.

Lynn LOVED IT! :D

message 14: by KJ (last edited Feb 14, 2015 08:31AM) (new)

KJ Van Houten No matter how much I may like or dislike whatever happens in your books, I have tremendous respect for you as an author and for the stories you write -- they are always amazing and set my imagination off in ways no other author does! I would NOT want you to write any other way or any other story than the one inside your head. No other series prompts me to speculate and come up with ideas and theories for every minute detail! No other author has ever made me shout aloud at 1 am when the family was asleep because of a cliffhanger. No other series has led me to arrange regular meetings with wonderful people that are similarly obsessed just to talk about your books.

As I typed somewhere else earlier today, I read a ton of books every year. It's like drinking my favourite drink or eating my favourite dessert as often as I want. But then a book by KMM comes along and I get a taste of ambrosia, and for a while I forget all other tastes cease to exist!

message 15: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Love your books and you! Thank you for writing this. ❤️

message 16: by Miranda (new)

Miranda Hofmann I'm so sorry you had to write this but I am happy you did to hopefully snub some of lies that have been floating around. I love each one of your books and you make me fall in love with each character even if they aren't my favorite in a book somehow you make me adore them, hell you still have me loving V'lane/Cruce and look who he turned out to be ;) Keep rocking it girl!

message 17: by Susan (new)

Susan Farina Ms. Moning, I have such respect for you. Your talent is amazing! Keep following your muse. I will keep reading!

message 18: by Roxanne (new)

Roxanne You tell 'em Karen! I hate you had to take the time out to write this though. Hopefully people will get the hint in the future! True Moning Maniacs will never give up on you and are ready to ride this story to it's true end!

message 19: by Karen (new)

Karen I have mixed feelings about this Karen. On one hand I'm angry and disheartened you had to take time away from your craft to address this stuff; on the other hand, I'm glad you addressed the detractors who find spreading rumors , and for lack of a better term- conspiracy theories- sport. Never mind the asshats. You rock sister!

message 20: by Laura (new)

Laura My husband and I read these books together, each reading a chapter aloud. We buy them the day they are released. We try to only read a few chapters a night to make it last longer, but toward the end we tend to gobble it up! I feel that Burned was the best one yet. I even predicted to my husband that Dani was going in to fairy and coming out older, but never saw Jada coming! Karen you are our favorite author and we cannot wait until the next one comes out!!

message 21: by Robin (new)

Robin Just wanted you to know that I fully support your vision for the Fever series. Thank you for not allowing these negative opinions to affect what you write. I trust your writing. I love that you take me to your magical world that is the Fever series. Looking forward to Feverborn!

Claire Louise¤°.¸¸.•´¯`» I will AVIDLY go along with you on the Fever ride for as long as your bugfuck muse drags us all. Cause Ryodan and Barrons are on the same train! <3 My BURNED love runneth over.

message 23: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Burned left me with a lot of questions (and some disappointments, I'll admit) but overall I still very much enjoyed it. Thanks for the awesome ride and can't wait to read more.

message 24: by Kate (last edited Feb 14, 2015 10:42AM) (new)

Kate Drolet kimble I liked Iced but missed Mac and Barrons. Then I read (and LOVED) Burned and missed Dani. Now I'm listening to Iced on audiobook and appreciate it SO MUCH MORE since I have Burned for context. You're a brilliant writer and I've trusted you through every book. I can't wait to see where you take us (and where they take us, because I know they're partly in control of themselves by now). Thank you for sharing your gift with us!!!

message 25: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly Love every single book! you can do no wrong!

message 26: by Jenifer (last edited Feb 14, 2015 12:33PM) (new)

Jenifer Wow, Karen, I love this. Thank you so much for taking the time to explain this to all of us. I love you and love all of your books but was one of those people who felt like there was less Dani in Burned because of the stink that some people raised over Iced (I loved Iced). And to be honest, I think it tainted my reading of Burned as it was always in the back of my head.

I think because I love your books and your spirit so much, I felt a bit protective over what I thought was a manipulation of your plan for the Fever world even though you had told us from the start that she would be aging quickly. But, now, I can take a deep breath and know that you are content and your stories are going where YOU want them to go and that makes me very very happy as a reader.

Now, I'm going to go back and re-read Burned with my new perspective on your writing and publishing practices.

Love you and thanks for continuing to write and connect with your readers.

message 29: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl Estcourt they are the best books i have ever read and believe me i read a hell of a lot of books Borrows is the best ALPHA male ever and nothing can compare to the men in these books

message 30: by Beth Tuley (new)

Beth Tuley I absolutely love every single one of your books- For someone to try to tell you how to write YOUR books is astoundingly arrogant.

message 31: by Christy (new)

Christy Thank you for this post as an answer to my post from Facebook. I love, LOVE the entire Fever series and Iced and Burned. I hope I did not miscommunicate that on FB. I was frustrated with Mac, but I do trust you and where you are taking her, us, and the story. There is always a purpose for what you do, and when and where. And after reading this blog post from you, I believe that Mac will be back and I look forward to seeing the Mega in her complete mega glory again. High respect for you Karen Marie Moning. :)

message 32: by Kathryn (last edited Feb 14, 2015 12:57PM) (new)

Kathryn I've read all your books (more than once!) and listened to a lot of them on audible as well. Just finished Iced (again!) on audible and will listen (again!) to Burned when I'm done with Iced. Oh how I wish there would be a TV series (Netflix??) based on the Fae books, maybe going all the way back to the Highlander books, since the McKelter's are a part of the Fae series....

message 33: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen I've read all your books and loved every single one!!!! Your books are absolutely fantastic!!!!

message 34: by Danielle (last edited Feb 16, 2015 07:43AM) (new)

Danielle It always amazes me when an author catches so much crap they have to explain a situation. Who are these readers that think they know better than the person to whom the characters speak? Its craziness! For better or worse the book turns out how it is seen in the eyes of it's creator. Why do people have to personally attack the author over a book. If you don't like it, write your review and be done with it.

Sally Thank you for this post. Hopefully this puts a lot of the rumors and speculations to rest.

I love your bitch muse, I hope she stays around for a long time!

message 37: by Amy (new)

Amy I absolutely LOVE your bitch muse and wherever she is taking us, is perfectly fine with me. Your writing is so amazing, I can see it all vividly when I read, and reread, and reread, all of your books. My husband and I were fortunate enough to visit Ireland in November and so much of it was exactly as I'd read through the Fever series and I fell even deeper in love with the country, and with your books.

message 38: by [deleted user] (new)

Love you Karen so much...write the books you want and as Dani would say FECK everyone else...bonnie

message 39: by Keltie (new)

Keltie Love all your books Karen. You're doing everything right. Keep them coming.

message 40: by Melanie (new)

Melanie This is my all time favorite series. I believe that if I liked or agreed with everything in it that would not be true. Thank you for sharing your gift with the world.

message 41: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly Karen,

To be honest, when I first started to read ICED, I couldn't get into it because I was on a Mac and Barrons "high", if you would. But when Burned came out I decided to not want to miss anything in ICED so I started again and finished both ICED and BURNED in under two weeks. I loved the glimpses into the "Nine". I like how Mac isn't the "be all end all". It makes her more real and establishes Barrons' "love" of her.

I have turned so many people onto these books, and then we went and read all the Highlander's books and the hard to find, Into the Dreaming. I have to say my favorite of them all is Adam Black. Such a captivating and complex character. Would love to hear more about his daughter too.

Be true to yourself. I love that you write for yourself and share it with us. Sorry people are rumor mills.

Good luck in life after divorce. Live well and hurry up with the third in this trilogy! ;)

Kim

Michelle Cummings Thank you!

message 43: by Rozus (new)

Rozus where is my previous comment? that's funny

message 44: by Christy (new)

Christy Finished Burned. Patience is always virtue in reading intense stories like Burned. Mac is back? Mac never left!! She just hit a snag, but kept going, proving her mettle and doing what as John Wayne would say "Courage is being afraid but saddling up anyway." This book shows growth in Mac and a maturity that manifests itself with turn of the page and scene unfolding. Beautiful, dark, powerful, not enough adjective to describe this series in general and KMM's writing in particular. Can't wait until the next arc in this exciting journey.

message 45: by Diana (new)

Diana I love every book you've written. I believe in you and your muse. Thank goodness you listen to her. She's a bad b*&%h and I love her. If writing were easy everyone would do it.
You rock Karen keep doing what you do.

XO
Diana

message 46: by Laura (new)

Laura It's interesting to me that people are upset that Mac was in this book so much. She's got the evil book living inside her; how could she be through? That makes no sense. I think some people are just used to the romance formula so many writers use (successfully) where each "couple" gets a book or a series then it moves along. IME the best stories are never that simple. I thought the book was great overall and I can't wait for the next one.

And honestly, even if someone doesn't like Mac in this book, there was LOR! He was so funny and awesome, he had to cancel out anything negative. Fake priya Lor cracked me up.

Kat valentine ( Katsbookcornerreads) karen i loved this book!!!! i read the entire book in one night!!!!!! you are the best at what you do ive been hooked on your books from the highlanders to the feverbooks you are awesome!!!!! i knew it was was going to be a good read when i read your dedications to your cat who had passed away to your one for your dad. 10 pages later reading that sex scence with mac and jericho i went from weepy to a hot flash and wet panties!!!!! only you could do it!!!!! you keep writing i will keep reading!!! your my rock star!!!

message 48: by Sally (new)

Sally Penska I have read the whole fever series in just 10 days and I have to say l loved every one of those books and look forward to the next!

message 49: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca I have never loved a series like this one! You are a phenomenal author, and so happy you shared this with your fans.

message 50: by Kira (new)

Kira What I love about the Fever series is that to really appreciate the characters and story, you have to be patient and look at it as whole. This is what I don't understand about folks who have made negative comments about Burned. Were you not paying attention in the first five books? Chill out folks and just enjoy the ride!! I love Iced and Burned because I understand that the story is building. Moning is one of my favorite authors because of how she has structured this series. My only issue is having the patience to wait for the next book!!
