Why All of You Are Awesome

I'm not very good at feelings. Generally, the mere hint of a conversation that's gearing up towards discussions about "feelings" is enough to send me running for the hills.

However, I've been thinking a lot about why I like Goodreads so much, and yes, while the shelves and the giveaways and the author features are nice, Goodreads isn't as responsible for their awesomeness as they'd like to think.

No, the main reason Goodreads is awesome is because of the people who use the site.

One of the hazards of being an author is that you become a little (or a lot) egocentric. Because however much you may love reading, it's your own books that pay the bills. So you spend a lot of time making teasers, writing blog posts, and creating giveaways in order to sell more books.

Part of the reason I continue to review is because I don't want to forget the reasons why I became a writer in the first place. One of those reasons is because I loved reading. Love it with a passion.

The other reason, and one I probably don't talk about enough, is because of my friends and fans.

I don't like my writing.

I think I've said this before. And nobody ever seems to believe me -- but it's true. I hate my writing. And I go through cycles where I can't write anything at all because the despair that I'll never be good enough is so great.

But my friends and readers encouraged me when nobody else would. Back on Fictionpress, it was my readers who suggested that I was good enough to publish for real. It's my readers who do all these amazing blog posts and interviews, who create teasers and write reviews that are so wonderful and positive that I almost want to cry. It's my readers who lend my books to their friends and donate my books to their local libraries.

It's my readers who make me an author.

I also love the reviewers on this site. It's such a tightly knit network of people who love books and love talking about books. I love that no matter which hour of the day it is, I can log on, and someone, somewhere in the world is down for a chat about books, or language, or geeky things, or hot K-drama actors.

I love Goodreads because it is full of the people who remind me why I love reading and why I love writing. I love Goodreads because everyone on here is just so strong and opinionated and intellectual and wonderful and, well, awesome.

Mostly, though, I think I just love you guys.

I don't think I say that enough, but I do. And I feel so so lucky to count you all as friends, readers, followers, and what have you. So thank you!

I can only speak for myself, but I not only enjoy your writing, but I like YOU as well. You're fun to chat with, your comments are at turns funny and thoughtful. Your writing may make you an author but YOU make yourself a friend. That's why I like you, and I'm proud to count you as a friend. That's my two cents anyway, Pikachu. :)

Aww, thanks! That makes me so happy to hear!

I'm proud to count you as a friend, too, Loki! You may even be better than your Tom Hiddleston counterpart, and that says something. ;)

Mairéad (is roaming the Undying Lands) This really speaks to me in a lot of ways. Nenia, I know the feeling about not liking or hating your own writing--I'm the same, especially when you read published books and think "wow, i'll never write like that" or something to that effect. It's intimating and challenging. But the main fact that does make us authors are our readers. I think that's something that's often forgotten.

Without our readers, where would we be?

I just totally agree with this blog post completely. I love coming here for the good company that reminds me that I'm not alone in reading and/or writing. This place is truly something special and its the people you know that make up such a wonderful community and fellowship/friendship and bond over whatever. It's amazing to think about to be honest. o:

That. And then some.

I'd like to add that the reason I love you and your reviews so much is that you stayed true to yourself even after you started writing. So many authors, self-published or not give only five stars ratings and praise books because they're afraid people will alienate them because they wrote a negative review.

More than your reviews and amazing writing though, I like you for just being who you are: Funny, caring, open-minded... Beautiful inside and out.

Rabbit {Paint me like one of your 19th century gothic heroines!} Nenia, you are one of my book buddies. <3

Waaaah, Lea, you're too kind.

I won't lie, it's been really difficult. I had to take some hiatuses at various points because of some tensions with various users on this site were making me feel so awful. And while I can see the point about the whole authors not reviewing argument, I also feel like it would be disingenuous for me to stop.

Authors are can be very buddy-buddy, and cliquish, so it's quite possible that I would be more of a success if I had sucked up to some of the more popular new adult authors, but I would have hated myself for that, so I will just sit here in this hole I have dug for myself and hope that one day integrity pays off.

I think you are a beautiful person, too. Everything you said about me pretty much sums up how I feel about my friends and followers. There truly are some extraordinary people on this site and I really hope that I can meet them all in person one day. (Seriously -- I need to figure out how book conventions work and get myself a table.)

Awe. You are welcome for all the trashy historical smut. ;) LOL

Bookkitten (collector of nice things) Fluffy, I think I´ve said that somewhere else before, but when you write in this style about things you don´t like, I really really like to see what you can do when you write about things you like.

C´mon, unicat, I dare you.
