Shrien Dewani Goes Free
The NPA thought that they has the Shrien Dewani case all swewn up but Shrien Dewani dramatically walked free from court after his murder case was thrown out. The 34-year-old had been accused of orchestrating a plot to have his wife Anni Hindocha killed during their honeymoon in 2010. Three men have been convicted of the murder but prosecutor's in South Africa fought for four years to have Dewani extradited to stand trial. But the case faced major problems from the beginning when judge Jeannette Traverso ruled that evidence about Dewani's sexuality was not relevant. After hearing weeks of evidence from Xolile Mngeni, Mziwamadoda Qwabe and Zola Tongo - all convicted over Anni's murder - the defence applied to have the case thrown out. Judge Traverso said the evidence offered by state witnesses - who were all promised reduced sentences for cooperating - was "riddled with contradictions".
