MARK OF THE THIEF arc giveaway

Here it is, the promised giveaway! I’m offering the chance to win one of 8 arcs (short for Advanced Review Copy) for MARK OF THE THIEF, and some secondary prizes (book giveaways from The Ascendance Trilogy).

MARK OF THE THIEF tells the story of Nicolas Calva, a mining slave in Ancient Rome. One dayMarkOfTheThief1 he is forced by a Roman general named Radulf to enter a sealed cave believed to contain the lost treasure of Emperor Julius Caesar, seeking Caesar’s childhood bulla. All Roman boys have bullas, amulets worn around the neck to bring them good luck. But Caesar’s bulla contains the magic of the gods. Nic finds the bulla, and the griffin who guards it, and when he steals the bulla for himself, suddenly he is thrust at the center of a war to control the fall of the Roman Empire. Nic holds a magic he does not understand and cannot control. As long as he has it, he is a target. But as the weight of Rome comes upon him, he begins to realize that he cannot survive without it.

If that sounds like something you want to read (or sell on eBay), here’s how to enter:

Talk about the book on whatever social media you use (Instagram, Twitter, Facebook). If you can tag me into the post (“Jennifer A. Nielsen, author” on Facebook, @Nielsenwriter on the others), then that’s great. Otherwise, let me know where you posted it here in comments. Every posting is a separate entry.
In your post, let your friends know there’s a free download of the first chapter from Amazon  or Barnes and Noble.
You can also leave a comment below telling me why you want this book for yourself, your classroom, school, book club, or for a gift for someone.
You can enter by following my author page on Facebook or following me on Twitter. Both count as separate entries and I’ll see it online so you don’t need to tell me. If you already follow me, let me know below in comments and that will count as your entry.
BONUS 5 ENTRIES! I’ve been super studying ancient Rome now for months. If you can post in the comments a fact that I don’t already know about Ancient Rome, you get 5 extra entries. I will only respond if you did it. Otherwise, keep looking!

Obligatory rules section.

This is an international giveaway. Except to the Antarctic. Penguins, don’t bother entering. It won’t work, not again.
The contest begins when it posts live and ends at midnight EST on Dec 14, 2014. After that, you can still do all the stuff above. I’ll like it, but it won’t help you win a book.
I’m not responsible for lost entries. Sheesh, I’m barely responsible at all.
If you are a winner, I will do everything possible to get the book safely in your hands, but things sometimes happen. Terrible post office disasters nobody likes to think about. I’m not responsible for those things either.
I will post the winners here on the blog, on Twitter, and my author FB page at the end of the contest with instructions on how to get me your mailing address. That’s as far as I will go to hunt you down (because seriously, you don’t want me cyberstalking you).
I have no idea whatsoever what your odds are of winning. Seriously, how could I possibly know that? Consider your odds one in six gazillion, so that if you win, you’re going to feel extra lucky.

Enticing Book Excerpt

“I was beginning to think I wasn’t actually alone. Somewhere in the blackness, something was awake. Its breath came in even and deliberate strokes. Whatever it was, it knew that I was here too.

The bones I had stumbled over weren’t from people who had died in here. They had all been killed.”

Wanna enter now? Go for it, and good luck!

Natalie OHmygoodness, I am so excited for this book. I am a huge fan of the Ascendance Trilogy, and introduced a bunch of people to the books. Okay, maybe forced them to read them is a better word, but they all loved them, too. I would love to get an ARC copy of Mark of the Thief. For myself and then to show all my buddies.

message 2: by Melia (new)

Melia 1. When speaking latin, the Romans would often leave out words they thought were unnecessary. Like, if its given there is a girl they wouldn't always say "she smiled" but would sometimes just write "smiled", assuming the 'she' didn't need to be stated.

2. If a slave was invited to sit on the couch with their masters it would grant them freedom.

3. On personal statues made for citizens, they would purposely leave flaws

I LOVE the Ascendance Trilogy and have been looking forward to this book ever since I finished the Shadow Throne, to get an ARC would be amazing!

(I follow you on facebook and twitter and have posted for this on my facebook and twitter)

Gracie When I read the Barnes and Noble sample, I could only see the preliminary pages (title page, dedication, etc.) and about two paragraphs. On the Amazon version, I could only see the cover. Is there something you are supposed to do to get the first chapter?

message 4: by Anne (new)

Anne Marie Alright! I loved The False Prince trilogy, and most of my family do, too. (The others just haven't read it.) Do I need to post this on your blog?

Oh! I've been meaning to tell you this for a while. While entering a contest (the prize was money, not a lot, just enough to get me motivated), I used pictures of your book covers that I printed out. I TOTALLY forgot about copyright. I didn't will the contest, but I still feel a little guilty. I'm sorry. Will you forgive me?

Hmm, I don't know. I wonder if your computer has the proper app for reading the pages? I'm sorry I can't be any help on this.

I'm honored you would use one of my books to try winning a contest, Anne. Thank you, and no worries! Yes, you can post here as an entry for the ARC.

message 8: by Kristen (new)

Kristen I am about to start reading The Shadow Prince, the third book in your Ascendance Trilogy. I have really enjoyed the books so far, especially getting to know the precocious and witty Jaron. I teach middle school English, so I am forever looking for new books in which to entice my students. I have told several students about this trilogy, so fingers crossed that they enjoy it as much as I have. I would love to win your new book!!!! :)

message 9: by Emily (new)

Emily Caldwell So do you just comment to get entered? Ah it does yreally matter! Just so I can tell you,I brought the false prince to school today and the girl who is the locker next to me looked at me incredulously and ask how many times I have read this series I had to laugh and tell her I've lost count. I loooove them! Cannot wait for this to come out!

message 10: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Nielsen Thanks, Emilyne - yes, any comment counts as an entry!

message 11: by Cathy (new)

Cathy Wu This book seems really cool, and I really want to read it! I love Greek and Roman stuff so this seems really interesting. I've read the entire Ascendance trilogy and it's definitely one of my favorite book series!I'm really excited for this book!! Did you know that in ancient Rome, anyone could say that they're a doctor? Also, the custom of bumping wine glasses in a "cheers" comes from Rome because it was to prove that one was not trying to poison another as the wine spills from one cup to another when they bump.

message 12: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Nielsen I didn't know that about "cheers," Cathy. Five bonus entries to you!

Wow, that actually is really interesting and I have no idea where anyone would be able to find those facts. If you don't win with those I can't even imagine what facts are going to do it.

Melia Christianna wrote: "Melia wrote: "1. When speaking latin, the Romans would often leave out words they thought were unnecessary. Like, if its given there is a girl they wouldn't always say "she smiled" but would someti..."

Oh thank you! I learned them from my Latin class this year and (like you) I thought they were super interesting! Came in handy too! :)

Christina Anastasia Stavridi They sure did! ;) This is why kids need to pay attention in class. In my school we studied Rome in history last year.

Christina Anastasia Stavridi I have a question for Nielsen. When you say 'whatever media' does it count if I talk about the book in wordpress?

BTW I've read all the books in the Ascendance Trilogy and loved every single one of them, especially the False Prince.

message 17: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Nielsen Christianna - yep, Wordpress counts - just let me know you did it so I can count it as an entry! Thanks much for your kind words!

message 18: by bipasha (new)

bipasha Don't tell me you still have something to pen down after the awesomesauceness of the Ascendance Trilogy. Eet ees eempossible! (p.s. please let this one have an OTP... can't wait to see how you would span it out!)

Christina Anastasia Stavridi Jennifer wrote: "Christianna - yep, Wordpress counts - just let me know you did it so I can count it as an entry! Thanks much for your kind words!"

Great! And I'm just telling the truth.

message 20: by Ela (new)

Ela Casper Seeing that I'm not a penguin, I'll give this a try with some facts:
1.- Since there were no perfume sprayers, slaves had to fill their mouth with perfume and then spit it out gently on their master.
2.- To show how rich they were, emperors would vomit in order to keep eating, so they would go to the Vomitorium.
3.- Julius Caesar most beloved pet was a giraffe.
4.- Last one, the secret to keep their togas so white was to wash them with the ammonia from their urine. Quite gross but we can't deny that they looked fabulous!

It would be awesome to read this book, can't wait for it!

message 21: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Nielsen Well Pinky, I didn't know about #1, so let's consider that five bonus entries for you!
