"What's your boyfriend's name?" Ann asked Julie.
"Darren, but it might as well be 'delay," Julie said. "My sponsor wants me to delay seeing him for a year."
"You can't get delayed for a year," Emu said. The group groaned in unison at his pun.
"Why does my sponsor want me to wait a whole year?" Julie asked me.
I said, "I won't comment on how long you should wait, but I will tell you why. During the honeymoon stage, early romances are like a drug. They're a rush of good feelings, without much thought about the consequences. They're way more fun than working on recovery. They are a thousand distractions. The end of the honeymoon stage can be a tremendous let down. You still love the person, but you realize he or she has faults. And, occasionally there are nasty surprises that you don't need. Romance early in recovery can be a real threat to sobriety."
Today I will accept waiting is part of life.
