Pickled

Pickled
At the end of the group, Liam said, “I’m sorry I didn’t get to know you guys better. I think I would have liked this group.”

“What the #$#%@ are you talking about?” Michaela asked.

“I don’t have to worry about my father’s company any more, and I’m set financially. I don’t have any reason to eat pills. No reason to use pills means no reason for treatment.”

Relapse Boy snorted. “Except the main reason - you’re an addict,” he said as he stared at Liam. “Why do you think they put you in detox?”

“Because I took too many pills for too long. Now I’m detoxed and I don’t need the pills.”

Emu argued Liam had changed his brain chemistry and would always be prone to addiction. Julie told Liam she worried about what might happen to him if he relapsed. Ann said she would miss him.
Liam had no interest in anything I had to say. “You won’t admit I’m not an addict because the longer you keep me in treatment, the more insurance money you collect,” he said.

Today I will remember the slogan, ‘once a pickle never a cucumber again.’
