H.A.L.T.
After group was over, I walked into the kitchen to get coffee. Julie was explaining the health benefits of organic greens and soy milk. James listened in rapt fascination. Emu stood beside me as I poured a cup, gently shaking a bag of black licorice. “Want a piece?” he asked.

“Thanks! I love this stuff,” I said.

“But I hope this isn’t your lunch.”

Emu laughed. “No, I bought pop and Doritos at the Mini-Mart this morning. He pointed to a 20 ounce bottle of Mountain Dew and a family size bag of Doritos sitting on the table. Julie made a face. James picked up the Doritos and began reading the nutritional information.

“No offense to Julie, but you don’t have to go organic to be healthier,” I said. “You do need to practice a little nutritional common sense.” I tried to explain how diet was part of his recovery.

Emu shrugged. “I like Doritos for lunch and chocolate donuts for dinner. When I’m away from my mom I get to eat whatever I want.” Julie and I tried to convince him to eat healthier. Emu ate his Doritos and licorice, nodding in agreement as we spoke. James read the Mountain Dew bottle.

Today I will take care of my body because that’s where my soul and mind live.
