Insanity

Insanity
The next day Liam told the group his father was retiring. His parents planned to sell their share of the company and buy a vineyard. His mother was pregnant, but had decided she would run the vineyard.

“So my dad is going to retire at forty-eight,” Liam said, shaking his head. “My mother, who’s thirty-eight, worked exactly two months when she was sixteen. She plans to run a business, while she raises a baby, and drinks. The two of them probably haven’t drawn a sober breath since they landed in Europe. They’re going to make wine. I’m just barely sober, and about to be handed a million bucks.” I noticed Ann moved her chair a little closer to Liam.

Ann said, “You lucky SOB, you’re going to be rich.”
“&*^%$* *&^%^;” Michaela added.

“Are you worried about them?” Julie asked. “Are you worried about getting all that money all at once will be a relapse trigger?”

“Frank, my Dad’s business partner, is setting up a trust for me. An administrator will put me on an allowance until I’m out of college.”

“You are lucky you have him,” James chimed in.

“Frank’s neurotic, but my parents are insane. If it wasn’t for Frank, I’d be right there with them.”

Today I will be grateful for the sane and mildly neurotic people in my life.
