BOUND TO ACCEPT Is BANNED from AMAZON?!?!?!?!?!

Well, my new BDSM romance that was scheduled to be released today won't be sold through Amazon. They banned it.

I cannot believe this is happening.

Due to these unforeseen circumstances, the only place you will be able to buy my book is from Smashwords: https://www.smashwords.com/books/view...

Same here. :( I do nearly all of my book-buying with Amazon gift cards, 'cause there's no real-money book budget. That's exactly why this is so uncool of them.

If they do, that is so stupid because it means a lot of innocent books will get lost in the crossfire.

Exactly! When Terrorscape was banned, I lost a significant chunk of my monthly earnings. And right now, writing is my livelihood, so this seriously SUCKS.

Exactly. Even people who buy books all the time like my mother-in-law, she buys a $50 Amazon card from the grocery store and then uses it until it's gone. That's going to hurt your profits a lot. :\

On a more positive note, hopefully they will get back to you or at least put it back to a draft and then let you republish it...

Nenia Campbell Yeah. Tell me about it. :|

Please spread the word if you can. I really would like people to know what happened and where they can buy the book if they are still interested.

Anne Tilney Oh my god. I'm sorry to hear that Bound to Accept got banned on Amazon. :(

Amazon defends pedophilia guides but erotica fiction is banned? That's pretty screwed up logic.

I don't get it, but I just emailed them with a link that Sam provided me with. I made a point of emphasizing that the sex in this book is between consenting adults and that the warnings are for people with triggers.

We'll see what they say.

In the meantime, it would be awesome if you could spread the word and let people know what's going on. A lot of people wanted to read this book, and I would like people to know where they can get it.

message 59: by Sam (new)

Sam I will, I have to do some writing right now because I have the house to myself, which never happens, but I'll post a release day spotlight on my book blog when they get back. You might even check into some of the BDSM-oriented erotica book blogs about posting a book blast or reviews or something, 'cause with it only being on Smashwords right now, it will need more marketing. :\

I just find if funny that Amazon is against erotica but they haven't removed 50 Shades or other erotica fiction from major publishers.

Hope things work out for you. Yeah, I'll spread the word :)

Hahaha, a lot of authors host online release day parties, anniversary parties, cover reveal parties, etc (I'm considering doing a cover reveal party, but haven't decided). I've never actually heard of a banned book party, but who cares, it could definitely be a thing! People "come to" your event, you play games and do giveaways (you can even invite other authors to donate prizes to giveaway) and post teasers to get people excited about/knowing about your book, and everybody has a good time. I haven't thrown my own, but I've participated in a couple. It generally results in some page likes (voluntarily, I never personally require them for giveaways, though some people do that automatically) and more people knowing about your books. Plus, you can catch the attention of book people who follow the blogs and whatnot.

A book blast would be a promotional spotlight, you could arrange it however you like, just a book cover and synopsis, some people add like 10 fun facts or character profiles, you throw in some teasers and your synopsis and people share it on their blogs with the buy links/social media links and everything so more people know about it. Some people do it during a sale or provide a coupon to drive the sales while it's super visible. It's a lot--a lot--of organizing, contacting all the blogs and everything, and it's very time consuming and annoying, but I've seen some very mediocre books (sorry, books) somehow become Amazon bestsellers using these pain-in-the-ass methods, so I figure there has to be something to it.

message 68: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Henry Amazon are dicks.

They are cracking down on erotica and erotic romance in a big way, and banning stuff without even looking at it. If they think the title or the cover art is somehow inappropriate, they'll ban it. They're savig us from ourselves, you know.

Meanwhile, come and buy this chainsaw slasher horror book over here from Amazon...

(And of course I have nothing against chainsaw slasher horror books. I think if people want to read them, they should, just like people should be able to read books about adults having sex.)

Also, it may have been the cover. I did come across a discussion a while ago where someone said they were banning all covers with tied hands and handcuffs and things suggestive of non-consent.

Meanwhile, buy a copy of GTA3 from Amazon and you can replay that scene over and over where the hooker gets raped at the side of the road!

I'm glad you enjoyed the book. Smashwords is pretty awesome about letting people post what they want. I just wish more people knew about it!

message 71: by K.A. (new)

K.A. Merikan I feel so sorry for you :( They banned one of my books as well and no matter how many times I wrote to them, I would get their freaking generic answers!

But it IS worth writing to them again and again. I decided not to, because the short story wasn't worth the hassle, but I have a book with incest in it coming out in September and I'm biting my nails RAW. They do look at key words, so even though it would be helpful to readers, I never use the word 'rape' in the description, because Amazon could just red flag it off the bat. The same goes for incest. I'm not putting a warning for it, because it's not the main point of the book, nor is it there for titillation (like all those 'step-dad fucked me' erotica out there that Amazon gives a green light to). So my only worry is that someone will report the book (because I couldn't warn about the incest). I would then still go through e-mailing them until someone who actually gives a fuck answers. It's the worst that you as an author are dependent on the decision of some Amazon drone.

I know of a few cases where a change of wording was enough and a case where through constant e-mailing, the author finally got someone to have a proper look at the book and decide it was fine because the content was more horror than titillation. So it depends on how you 'sell' it to them.

Good luck!

message 72: by Pam (new)

Pam Faste aka Peejakers Hey, you should talk to K.A. Merikan. I know this has happened to them a couple of times & they've worked it out. I bet they could tell you how to get in touch with the right people to do that. I know one thing that can cause this is if you include certain trigger warnings in your book description.

Hope this helps!

Thank you so much for the words of advice, K.A. This is actually my second book to be banned by Amazon and it's even more annoying this time around because they didn't even bother to send me an email notifying me of this fact.

I really appreciate the tip. One of my friends just supplied me with a link, so I tried to push the fact that all the sex is consensual (and between two friends), and that the warnings were just there so people with triggers would not be offended.

It's nice to know that if I email them enough I actually stand a chance of getting my books back up. So thanks for that little ray of hope! <3

Nenia Campbell That's not just fancy. That's super fancy!

Nemo (The ☾Moonlight☾ Library) Nenia, next time don't submit the warnings until the book's on your Author Central account, then add in 'from the author' the trigger warnings. Just one way to go about it.

They probably banned it because it had rape in the blurb. They have bots to spot that kind of thing. it might also have been the cover with the bound woman on her knees:

http://the-digital-reader.com/2014/06...

You can re-package, re-cover, re-write the blurb and re-submit the book. Not sure about Terrorscape, that may have been banned because someone reported it as inappropriate. there's rape in that one, too, isn't there?

Amazon doesn't want their erotica to look like erotica.

Thanks, Nemo. That's really helpful. Looks like I'll have to try my luck with repackaging then unless I can get a hold of an actual representative.
