BOUND TO ACCEPT Is BANNED from AMAZON?!?!?!?!?!

Well, my new BDSM romance that was scheduled to be released today won't be sold through Amazon. They banned it.

I cannot believe this is happening.

Due to these unforeseen circumstances, the only place you will be able to buy my book is from Smashwords: https://www.smashwords.com/books/view...

Lauren Shawcross WHAT THE FUCKERY IS THIS BULLSHIT?? -_-

Fuck amazon and their censorship!

message 2: by Nenia (new)

Nenia Campbell They didn't even email me this time!!! That's why I'm so mad! I just went over to see what was taking the files so long to be approved and saw the word "BLOCKED" next to it!

Bookkitten (collector of nice things) What the...? o.o

message 4: by Kyle (new)

Kyle I'm so sorry, Nenia! :'( This is completely ridiculous.

message 5: by Nenia (new)

Nenia Campbell @Lauren: I KNOW!!!! And they didn't even tell me it was banned! I had to find out for myself! D:

@Bookkitten: Grrrr!

message 6: by Chippy (new)

Chippy Marco I'm so sorry to hear that. That's a horrible thing for Amazon to do.

message 7: by Nenia (new)

Nenia Campbell @Chippy: I was SO EXCITED about this book's release. I don't understand why they would do this.

@Skyla: I'm steaming over the fact that they didn't even send me a freaking email.

I feel like they should have at least sent me a courtesy email if they were going to ban my book on its release date. At least.

message 12: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl Hall That stinks.

It not my type of book but I would never condone banning it.

:(

Is there any way you can contest it?

message 13: by Nenia (new)

Nenia Campbell I don't know. One of my readers made a petition on change.org to contest the banning of my other book, Terrorscape, and I think over 200 people signed it. But nothing happened.

I didn't get an email informing me of the ban so I have no idea who to contact or why they even banned my book in the first place. I feel so helpless. :|

Same here. I actually cried a little when I found out, because oh my God. It's like being really excited about your birthday only to find out that everyone forgot. :|

I don't know how you feel about Smashwords, but they do have Mobi (kindle) formats for sale there: https://www.smashwords.com/books/view...

message 18: by Sam (new)

Sam What kind of warning did you put on it? I think once they ban one of your books, they keep a closer watch on what you post. This is so stupid.

message 19: by [deleted user] (new)

I don't even know how they would be able to? I mean doesn't the book have to come out first before being banned?

message 20: by Nenia (new)

Nenia Campbell Sam wrote: "What kind of warning did you put on it? I think once they ban one of your books, they keep a closer watch on what you post. This is so stupid."

The same one that's on the Goodreads summary. I always post warnings on my erotica novels because I know how sensitive people can be to triggers.

Nenia Campbell Kat Stark wrote: "I don't even know how they would be able to? I mean doesn't the book have to come out first before being banned?"

That's what I thought too. I guess they made an exception in my case? Yay, me.

message 22: by Nenia (new)

Nenia Campbell Oh hey guess what. Just got an email from Amazon. Is it a notification for why my book was banned? No, it's an advertisement, letting me know about the preorder feature they're extending to indie authors.

AHHGJLSDJFSLD

THANKS, AMAZON.

message 23: by PJforaDay (new)

PJforaDay :( That sucks.I don't read erotica but banning it is ridiculous.

I am a bit skeptical because of international purchasing :/

And I said it once, I say it again: get an independent publisher or do a kicks. :/

That might be why. I would put a more general warning on Amazon and just be specific on Goodreads. I was reading on the Kindle forums a month or so ago that people were having their books blocked because of titles and descriptions/warnings alone.

I don't know how it works. I've had some people tell me that Smashwords was actually cheaper than ordering from Amazon internationally, but maybe that varies from country to country.

Shit. Well, now that it's banned I can't edit or resubmit it. So I'm pretty much screwed. I guess next time I'll just have to post a vague disclaimer--but that seems disingenuous!

message 32: by Sam (new)

Sam That's my bad, I should have said something when I saw the GR warning. It even crossed my mind when I read the rape fantasy one, but for some reason I have a bad habit of assuming people already know things because I do in these situations. :[ I don't think it's disingenuous, especially given that you've had two banned books on Amazon. Put up the BDSM warning (that's kind of a blanket warning) but don't get into specifics. The other option is the people who shop primarily on Amazon aren't going to be able to buy your books. :\

message 33: by Nenia (new)

Nenia Campbell Yeah, I lost a LOT of money when they removed Terrorscape from their database.

Sam I can imagine. That's where people do the bulk of their ebook buying. If I didn't publish on Amazon, I would sell zero copies of my books. :\

I obviously haven't read it yet so I don't know if there's anything early on they might have read in it (if they read a little just to see) but my best guess is that it was probably warning. :\ Did you email them about it?

No, do you know who I'd contact? I tried looking into it but they don't seem very contact-friendly, and I didn't get an email from them so I don't know who to appeal.

message 38: by Sam (new)

Sam First, this has some helpful info if you dont know--apparently you can have them put it back to a draft, and make changes from there. https://kdp.amazon.com/community/mess...

But I'm not sure how you contact them to do so. :\

message 39: by Sasa (last edited Aug 14, 2014 03:40PM) (new)

Sasa Amazon has a track record for abusing authors and publishers and supporting conserva-tools. Sell hundreds works of lousyass smut with inaccurate portrayal of BDSM and has boatloads of domestic violence? A-Okay. Guides for pedophiles? Completely fine. Their reasons?

"Amazon believes it is censorship not to sell certain books simply because we or others believe their message is objectionable."
Yeah fuckin' right. What a joke.

That's why I rarely buy from Amazon. They're run by terrible people who don't care about their employees, their customers, or anyone. Fuckin' joke. Sorry, I'm just really, really mad for you. AAAAUGHHHHH!!!!

message 40: by Sam (new)

Sam Oh, you know what! I just got an email from them the other day when I uploaded a newer version of Because of You. I'll see if there's a contact email or anything in there.

message 41: by Nenia (new)

Nenia Campbell Wait, so it's okay to write a book about how to be a pedophile but BAD to have a book between two consenting friends experimenting with their sexuality???

WHAT THE HELL?

Now I'm angry too. That is so not fair. :(

Thanks for the words of support, though, June. It's nice that I don't have to go through this all alone.

Smashwords does offer Kindle-compatible docs. I believe it's the Mobi file.

And thank you so much for the words of support and kindness. This really bummed me out. It's so nice to have the huggles of a community.

I was actually planning on buying it since I had an Amazon gift card. :( Booooo. I'm surprised they didn't even formally notify you that it was banned. I'm wondering also if they have certain words for filter that they put on a banned list or something.
