Kaje Harper Well, the idea was functional of course. Interesting they made it so humanoid...

Falling Free is a favorite of my oldest kid's, and mine.

Karl Smithe So can people be put into virtual reality simulators on Earth to control quaddie robots in space? Then why shoot people into space unless absolutely necessary?

Granted that JPL's wonderful robot explorers have given us more science for the buck than any other part of the space program, I would point out that if we wait till something that complex is absolutely necessary, we won't know how. Any pool of knowledgeable people must be constantly renewed, or the attrition of time will destroy the knowledge base.

When something is so utterly new in human endeavor, the only way to learn how is to do it. I suspect they would not, for example, have been able to design this robot till they had acquired knowledge of what it needed to do and how it needed to do it, in part by hard experience.

(I admit, I would love to know if the designers were familiar with Falling Free, and if I could claim inspiration, for the benefit of my hard SF street cred.)
