Windows 8 is effing scary

Apparently, Windows 8 decides when to update. It's not even telling you in advance. You can't switch it off or defer it. This is the total - utter - reduction of the computer user to the state of toddler. "There, there, we know what's good for you, don't you worry your pretty little head."

So, when I switched on my computer, the teal background turned purple and the system informed me I was logged into a temporary account and wouldn't be able to access my files. I couldn't get online, either (so not even to work on a file in GoogleDocs). My desktop background (where I have my current files) was pretty much empty. No files reachable OR visible.

Some hyperventilation later, I assumed it was the update. No progress bar told me how long it would take. Gods be thanked for my iPad to keep me entertained. I'd actually sat down to get back to work on my birds book. When the Muse is singing like a banshee, I want to write NOW. Windows 8 thought that was unacceptable. Or at least that update was much more important than me getting back into my file.

*shakes fist*

Can we find a way to not treat users like complete fools with only two brain cells rubbing together unhappily, please? What next? Computers who enforce the 40-hr working week or switch off mid-flow because they are concerned we're not getting enough sleep? (OVER MY DEAD STINKING CORPSE, BILL!)

Harrumpf.

Now back to writing the birds book. It's hard-going enough, without rebellious technology stepping on my dick.

Shadowspawn Your description mirrors my reaction to Windows 8. I'm dreading my workplace mandating that I must migrate.

Victoria Zagar This is where I make some some snarky comment about being a Mac user.

Seriously though, I feel grateful for my dream machine every time I hear a Windows user talk about their experiences.

Nichole (DirrtyH) What next? Computers who enforce the 40-hr working week or switch off mid-flow because they are concerned we're not getting enough sleep?

Lol. This sounds wonderful, sign me up.

Bea I can agree with your frustraighted feelings for any piece of technology. But I agree with Victoria, my life has been so less stressful by going Mac about 4 years ago.

Camy Buy a MAC.
Change your life.

message 6: by Kaje (new)

Kaje Harper Aargh. I go online in Linux only. My windows user is locked out by the firewall. When I want to let it update, I open the firewall briefly to let it out.

Vero O my, now I am afraid, just bought a new laptop last friday and the nice IT-Shop-Lady was smiling quite condescending, when I asked if I could have one with Windows 7 as I am used to that and not good with changes IT-wise... She told me, that Windows 8 is better (for whom? I am wondering now...) and I bought the thing and didn't touch it much over the weekend or the following week...and now I am really afraid...

Aleksandr Voinov Tami - I think Win8 is a big improvement over the others, but it does treat you like a child.

message 9: by Shadowspawn (new)

Shadowspawn I believe in computer diversity and work on PCs, Macs, and Linux favors, but I still find Windows 8 a scary prospect for an operating system. Of course that may just be me being set in my ways and metaphorically telling those young punk operating systems to get off my lawn.

Aleksandr Voinov LOL. :) I like that image. :)

And I don't really have the option to buy a Mac. The compatibility issues would make it pretty much worthless for me. I couldn't work remotely from a Mac (somebody on the team has a Mac and had a dreadful time connecting to the network). Also, need reliable compatibility for editing/proofing/book doctoring. And I don't have enough space to put two desk tops up.... Meh.

Getting increasingly interested in a ChromeBook for purely-writing purposes.

Susinok I hate it that they no longer give you an option on Windows versions when you buy new hardware. Are you sure you can't turn off the auto update in settings somewhere?

message 12: by Vivian (new)

Vivian There is a way to turn it off--it isn't easy. Do you want to undertake the task? If so I can get them. Let me get the deets from The Man--a Ph D does come in handy sometimes.

message 13: by AJ (new)

AJ Preiss This was my reaction to Windows 8 when they installed it on all our work computers. So, that's why I am keeping my Windows 7. When I need a new computer. I'll get a mac.

message 14: by Anna (new)

Anna Amber, I agree. Won't switch to 8 from 7 for foreseeable future. :)

message 15: by Trish (new)

Trish I am holding onto to my windows 7 for as long as possible!

But Aleks, your last sentence made me spit my morning cup of coffee on my awesome windows 7! LMAO!!

message 16: by Kimiko (new)

Kimiko Kotani This is why we and my inlaws are all swapping our Windows machines for macs as we go. EEP!
