I like shared world series. One of my favorites from the past was Larry Niven's Known Space books. There were many overlapping characters and a shared space history. It stretched to at least two generations or more. He had both short stories, stand alone novels and a series (Ringworld) set in the shared universe. John Varley did it too.
Heinlein did it too in his later books. Lazarus Long showed up in many future books. Of course, it got strange later on, but that was Heinlein.
So more Doctrine, please! :) (And the Slash and Burn cyberpunk.... ;)
