Even the Most Powerful Man in the World Needs to Say Thanks
This election season, we’ve read countless stories of media gaffes, when various candidates have nearly blown their chances with unfortunate word choices or utterances of things better left unsaid. But, as Maureen Dowd writes in a recent New York Times op-ed, sometimes what you don’t say can have just as big of an impact—even if you’re the most powerful man in the world.
According to Dowd, this campaign year, the President is missing support from some of his former donors, who cited his failing to reach out and say thank you as a primary reason for not contributing this time around.
There’s a lesson to be learned here: if major political campaign donors feel slighted when they don’t receive a personal word of gratitude from one of the most powerful and busiest men in the world, imagine the impact “thank you” can have on your own life.
That one little expression truly can have an outsize impact—and you only get one reputation. So, it’s important to protect it. Failing to say thank you even one time, can give others the perception that you’re ungrateful, even if you’re not. And once you’ve created that negative impression, undoing it will take a considerable amount of time and work. Wouldn’t you rather spend your energy elsewhere?
Don’t risk your reputation or your relationships with others. Saying thank you is a nearly effortless way to create a positive impression and promote strong ties with others.
No matter how busy or important you are, there’s really no excuse not to say it.
