A Few Small Steps Can Start Your Day on the Right Foot

It’s back-to-school time, and for many moms and dads that means back to the old morning ritual of getting the kids up, making breakfast, and sending them off to school. But, a new school year also means a fresh start—and that makes it the perfect time to reexamine your personal morning routine to see if it’s working for you.

To make it easier, we’ve created this simple questionnaire. If these activities aren’t a part of your current AM office routine, consider adding them in.

Do you eat breakfast? A productive workday starts before you even leave for the office. We’ve all been told since we were kids that breakfast is the most important meal of the day and countless studies have shown that eating a morning meal gives you more energy and improves your problem solving skills. Additionally, Fast Company Design reports that eating breakfast can also help you make healthier food choices throughout the day and even keep your slim.

Do you make a to-do list? Make your to-do list a top priority. If you take the time to write it down before you turn on the computer, check your email, or surf the web, you’ll automatically prime your mind to take on the challenges of the day. That way, you won’t waste time on unimportant tasks and it will make the big ones seem more manageable seeing them in easy-to-accomplish chunks. [For more on making a to-do list, click here.]

Do you say thank you? Fast Company reported on its Work Smart blog that many successful people begin their days by focusing on the things they are most grateful for. Self-made billionaire Oprah Winfrey, for example, is known for keeping a gratitude journal. When you are preparing for the day ahead, pause and say thank you for the things you have accomplished and the others who’ve helped you along the way. This positive energy will help motivate you throughout the morning.

Do you do something nice? Morning is when many people work out, but it’s also the perfect time to exercise your NICE muscles. Making NICE a part of your morning routine—a compliment here, a bit of small talk there—helps you make being NICE a habit. Plus, it releases endorphins, the feel-good hormone, which can help you be more of a morning person, even if you’re really a night owl.
