And so it’s that time again, for the “Bloomington Writers Guild Third Sunday Write” (cf. May 21, et al.) even if, June’s First Sunday perversely falling on the 1st, my calendar makes it look more like the fourth. Fourth Sunday, that is, that is now even though it’s being treated here like it’s just the third. And as far as that goes, as I write this it’s really Tuesday.
But be that as it may, it’s time for a response to Writers Guild Prompter Shana Ritter’s offering of subjects for June: 1. fireflies. . . , 2. The world is upside down. . . , or 3. This is what I know for sure. . . , of which I’ve chosen the first.
After all, it’s the nearest. So, it being a warm day, to cut right to the chase:
FIREFLIES
Well, I should think so!
They bother me.
In warmer weather
they storm through the house
buzzing loudly like crazy.
They get on my food.
But wait just a minute —
isn’t all that only
doing their job?
After all, they’re flies.
So what possible grounds
could one have
to fire them?
